How good is the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM? I'm seriously contemplating on buying this lens.

Would it be appropriate for people / protraiture?

I've read on another review that this lens is not weatherproof compared to it's IS sibling. How far is this true?

I'm not a professional, so investing in the 'IS' version would not suit my budget.

Thanks gals & guys.

Yes.

It is true, it doesnt have the mount-seal, f.e. However, does it matter? A 5D Classic is not weathersealed either.

I'm not a professional, so investing in the 'IS' version would not suit my budget.

Thanks gals & guys.

In that case, go ahead. It is a great lens. Any of the 70-200Ls is.

Kind regards, Wim

Yonders, you mean, I guess. I won't get this lens myself, unless, maybe, I would become a pro. F/4L IS is good enough for me :D.

Kind regards, Wim ;)

Forget the IS version, it is discontinued !!

Maybe a 2nd version is coming ?

Otherwise, opticaly, the 70-200 f2,8 non IS is said to be better than the IS version. Those lenses are some of the best zooms Canon that build.

f2.8 is increadible to create bokeh, it is build like a tank and shots are so sharp. You will never regret it. I choose the f4 version and I only regret that it's not f2.8 :)

The Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS lens is of excellent build quality, has high IQ and produces sharp photo's wide-open (f/2.8). The lens is ideal for portrait photography, wildlife photography (within limits) and outdoor sports photography. I am not quite sure if this particular lens is "weather-sealed." However, it is dust/moisture resistant. The lens is one of Canon's work-horse "L" lenses. I have no regrets with mine.

I thought it had a 12-stop IS sytem, and was F/2.5? No?

I am disappointed already.

Did you read the article, or just the headline?

Anyway, to the OP everything wimg said is true. All the 70-200's are excellent, but the added stop can give you a little more DOF control. You might also think about the 70-200/4IS, as the IS can come in handy depending upon the type (or more correctly amount) of portrait lighting you use. If you like to do windowlight or late afternoon outdoor portraits handheld, the IS can be more helpful than the 2.8. Otherwise, I'd go with the 2.8 non-IS. Of course the ultimate 70-200 is the 2.8IS, but I digress.....

The extra cash the IS cost has been worth it to me. Make no bones about it, the 70-200L is heavy. If you plan on using it for sports (like me) and moving it around, the IS is a very valuable feature.

And you CAN find the IS version for sale. Not discontinued (to the best of my knowledge) and more than a couple places show the IS version in stock, ready to ship. Just crack the wallet open REALLY wide!

IS has nothing to do with being professional or not. Depending on what you will be shooting you might want to consider the 70-200 f/4 L IS. I got the non-IS version at first and found that I wasn't completely satisfied with it. So I upgraded to the IS version and it has been a dream to use so far, and the difference is night and day. I'm fairly new to photography myself so the IS has been very helpful for me.

The f/4 with IS is about the same price at the 2.8 without IS. Something to think about...

The best lens I've ever used. Sure, it can get a bit heavy after a while, but if you need details, this lens doesn't disappoint. The IS version is worth it if you need to handle low shutter speeds (but I think the f/4 IS version is more suitable). I probably won't get an IS version for a long time, as I'm more of wide angle-short tele person.

The responses have been great guys and informative too.

I do agree that being a pro should not be a discerning factor on deciding on the IS lens. What I meant is that, I would not be recovering on the cost of it.

The posts have provided valuable info; nonetheless I'll wait for some more posts and hopefully the bonus due at work comes up earlier :).

Has anyone found the white of the lens a disturbing factor?
