Well I was out taking pictures of lighting from the Monsoon last night and had my 40D on the tri-pod taking the pictures. It was about 6' in height up when I walked away from it for a second to see how the Mrs. and little one were doing. In that few seconds a wind gust blew and the camera fell backwards onto the pebble landscaping. The rear of the housing has some scuff marks on it and the 24-105 L seems to be ok. I shot 1 last photo and then went home. Tried to take a picture today and it will not focus with the half shutter press, ISO is stuck at 100 and will not change, Metering mode is stuck in last position along with the drive. Pretty much the top wheel will change the aperture only. When taking pictures not they are all blurry. So my question to all the guru's out there, is it going to have to take a trip to Canon for service?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

Sorry for your pain but I think the trip to Canon is inevitable. I shoot in the mountains near my home a lot and there is usually a bit of wind, I suggest that you hang a weight from the bottom of your tripod ALWAYS. I always do, my tripod has a hook for this purpose, and I have never had a blow over. Have seen it happen to others but both times they were nearby and managed to catch the camera before it hit the ground. Hope it doesn't cost too much to repair.

I am not a guru, but I would think so.
Good luck!

Do you have a battery grip you can try? It sounds like whatever piece of electronics is responsible for the buttons on the top right is busted and/or knocked loose. My guess is that it'd need to go to canon.

Can you get good pictures focusing manually?

I took the lens off and when I lightly shake the camera back and forth, I can hear something rattling around inside of the camera towards the top. :(
I do not have a battery grip, at least not yet. So I guess it is going for a ride.

As for the sandbag thing, I thought about it after the fact.

Ouch! Sorry to hear of your unfortunate mishap. From what damage you incurred to the camera body, a send off to Canon for a fix sounds inevitable. Glad that your lens is OK.

That is what I am missing out on right now. Been waiting all year long and now this! All well. May not be worth fixing in the long run. Kind of a good reason to upgrade to a new camera. Anyone have and idea of what they charge to diagnose a problem?

Not scratched up at all. The upper left of the camera took the damage along with the picture style selector. I will see if I can find the P&S and post a picture.
