Hi to all I need some help deciding on keeping my f4 is or selling it and getting the 2.8is. I 've done several weddings the last couple of months and my two primary lenses have been my Tammy 28-75 2.8 and my canon 70-200 f4.I ,a lot of times on the forum the f2.8 is considered not quite as sharp as the f4 I dont want to compromise anything at all because I absolutely love my f4 . Is the 2.8 at f4 as sharp as the f4. I know I would really benefit a lot with the 2.8 shooting weddings any advice on this would really help.

The f/2.8 IS version is not as sharp as the f/4 IS version of the lens. But then neither is any other zoom...if you need 2.8, then get it. It won't be as sharp, but its still a wonderful lens.

Hello...I would assume that if money was not a factor, then f2.8 would be better than f4.0, no?

f/4 IS vs. f/2.8 sharpness difference is massively overblown. There is really no practical difference. At f/4 they are essentially identical. At f/2.8 the 70-200 2.8IS is only slightly softer, but it's always been plenty sharp for my wedding needs. If you need 2.8 just go for it, there are so many factors that go into making an image and sharpness is only a tiny part of it.

From the pictures that I've seen both are super sharp. But f/2.8 is f/2.8. You'll never be able to go f/2.8 on the f/4. If anything rent the 2.8 and give it a workout and compare to your f/4.

I read that all the time. Is that REALLY true?

Verdict

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS is an amazing lens. It is truly outstanding when used on APS-C DSLRs and it suffers only from a minor quality deteriorations on full format DSLRs. The resolution figures are easily on prime levels throughout the whole range and even at max. aperture. Unlike most other full format lenses it manages to keep the vignetting on a moderate level. Lateral CAs and distortions are usually also nothing to worry about. The quality of the bokeh may not be as good as the very best fix-focal lenses but it's very good for a zoom lens. The build quality is excellent with the new sealing as a another highlight. On top of that the lens now features a image stabilizer with an efficiency equivalent to 4 f-stops (at cost of shutter speed). The only drawback is the very high price tag although price/performance-wise this is still a very sound offer. Highly recommended!

I would think if the 2.8 is a s sharp as the f4 at f4 and you gain from the 2.8
in low light conditions when needed (like weddings) it would be a worhwhile investment.

One other thing that may be decisive is the weight difference. The f2.8L IS lens is 1470 grams versus 760 grams of the f4L IS. That is literally like carrying two f4L IS lenses both attached to your camera. For many people that weight difference is not comfortable.

I know the difference in weight is something I've been looking at.
