Had the chance to shoot a couple friends cars last night. First time doing long exposure shots with my XSi.

On the left is a 1990 Pontiac Turbo Grand Prix, on the right is a 1987 Pontiac Trans AM

Unfortunately I'm not that great at long exposure shots yet so most of the pics turned out bad. Practice makes perfect I guess.

Here is one I liked

After that they just got blurry, it was getting dark fast and the camera was having issues focusing on the black cars after dark. On top of that when I did get it to focus it was still blurry. I blame it partly on my cheap $40 tripod... time to upgrade I guess!!

The light (highlights) that you can see on them is pretty good. Problem is that the building close to the car is killing the other highlights you should have in them. Black cars:

So your saying that the building is too dark for use with the darker cars?

Makes sense! I will have to go back there with a lighter car next time.

Any tips for focusing that late at night?

Anyone else care to share some C&C? I can take it! lol

Thanks!

That's a cool shot. Maybe try shooting when there is more light? I'm no expert at vehicle shooting though.

No. I said, "the building close to the car is killing the other highlights you should have in them." Maybe a white building would be better for that, but then it's going to affect how bright the car looks if it's in the background. Keep in mind that our eyes are drawn to the brighter parts of the shot. And those bright areas tend to make the dark car look even darker. Take a look at POST #30 near the bottom: The gray bar at the center is the same density all the way across.
A few Car Lighting Tips

Here I used a white building at the side at add some highlights, but I think you'll agree that they sky does a better job:

Shine flashlight on the headlight, or turn the parking lights on.
