72/77 step up ring. Will the 72mm hood still work?

The title says it all. If I install a 72/77 step up ring can I still use the hood designed for the 72mm lens?

I don't have the lens in front of me so I'm trying to visualize it without much luck.

The 77mm filter will usually fit inside the hood but only from the wide end (not the end that screws onto the lens) so you'd have to put the hood on first and then reach in to screw the filter on which is somewhere between very difficult and impossible.

A possible solution if you really need to do this is to get a lens hood that screws onto the threads of the 77mm filter. Plenty of cheap rubber ones on eBay.

Depends on the lens... you just have to try it.
