So many lenses out there and deciding what to buy. I am looking at the following lenses to use for travel and taking photos of the family during events etc... I will be picking up either a 20 or 30D. Of the 2 lenses, what would be more beneficial. The ef-s 18-55IS (about 100 bucks) and the ef-s 17-85 IS (about 350 bucks). Or other suggestions in lieu of the aforementioned. I already have a Tamron 28-300 XR DI with VC. I am leaning towards the 17-85 and not lugging the tamron around on vac.. Thoughts?

im not a fan of your Tamron superzoom & the 17-85 IS. my suggestion is if you have a small budget, go for the 18-55 IS + 55-250 IS combo.

Seconded, sell the Tamron 28-300 VC and get the 18-55 and 55-250 IS, maybe add a 50mm f/1.8 for good measure..

+1. That's an excellent setup right there.

Thanks people. Sounds like I have a solution. I've been reading the stickies and googling all over the map. It just got me more confused. I am also considering the 70-200 F2.8L and the 18-55IS

the 70-200 2.8 L is even better than the 55-250 IS. cant go wrong with that lens. its kinda heavy though for travelling, IMO. another option is the 70-200 4 IS L. smaller, lighter & super-sharp.

The 70-200 f2.8 is a very sharp lens with excellent IQ, but for traveling go with the f4 lens, like wise its a top lens.

Enjoy your holiday..:)

So many lenses. For starters it looks like the 18-55 ef-s IS. The price for the 55-250 is very attractive and realistically I will probably not take this hobby serious enough to justify the L lenses. Again, thanks for the input.

Realistically you're probably better off going for something less expensive like a 55-250 IS and then selling it as not that much of a loss down the track if you really are serious about needing a 70-200 2.8... you won't lose that much on resale compared to how much you'd lose buying a 70-200 2.8 and selling that once you figure out you don't like/need it.

The 55-250 isnt a slouch by any means, small, light, sharp and cheap :) it will serve you well bolted on a 30d!
