Hey,

I have been using the canon software for years - but only to download data from the card, nothing more. Main reason: I like the way it puts everything into date-shot folders, as opposed to just per card.

For some reason, the PITA software is now refusing to load on the mac - I have tried uninstalling, deleting all plist files etc but alas to no avail. I tried using Apeture but again. it didn't shift into folders as I wanted.

So I have two requests:

1 - any ideas how to fix le issue of Canon's software?
2 - failing that, any software you can recommend for Mac's that will download and sort the photos into 'the date shot' format, creating the folders as necessary?

Thanks in advance,
Saqib.

I've actually never used Canon software on a Mac, so I'll just go through the numbers. After uninstalling/deleting the software did you fix permissions?

Not sure how to fix that problem, as Maxxum said, reinstalling seems like a good option, but I can answer 2 in case 1 is still a problem. Lightroom 2 has exactly that, and I've used it with both OSX and Windows doing exactly that. Even works with a networked drive as the storage place (of photos, OSX version does not allow networked catalogs)

You should also check to see if Aperture features the same thing (should be able considering LR and a bunch of raw editors before it could), it's probably right there in the instruction manual (or help menu). If it is, you can remove one more step from your workflow, and usually that's a good thing.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

thanks for the reply basroil - the only issue with using aperture is that my current backup procedures are:

1 - download from camera into specified location - once I have worked on these I put them on to DVDR's and put each in a different physical place and delete the files from the HDD
2 - import from specified location into aperture (which i have set to put into aperture's own self-managed database)
3 - have two external backups for aperture

OCD? Me? Never!

If I import using aperture, it will either put it into it's own directory, or into the place I choose but then reference it when needed. If I do the latter, it will probably cause havoc if I click on the folder in Aperture at a later date.

I'm not sure why you think your method is OCD :) some ppl here go much further.

Aperture is really all you need. There isn't much reason to use DPP. Aperture can create folders for your projects in many formats, including by date. Metatag is your friend! You can let Aperture do all the work :)

I would start by viewing the Aperture tutorials at the Apple site (here (external link)). Aperture has many features you probably would like to take advantage of.

I tried the tutorials - didnt have much on the downloading and sorting I could see.

I like to orgnize projects as years, and within them albums with dates. the neat thing with using canon is that I can drag and drop the date folders and it creates albums with the dates. Maybe a lil stupid, but it works for me :)

Anyway, I tried the repair permission thing and only installed image browser and now it is all working peachy. not sure why it screwed up since I didn't overwrite or update anything.

Thank you all for your replies in any case :)

Sometimes permissions are changed by other programs, the OS or by you (when you change another action). Repairing permissions just changes everything according to the user/group. Glad that did it for ya :)

Aperture can accommodate you completely though. You're adding (a) steps by using DPP. Give this a try and if you don't like it, no harm.

1. Connect your camera/card - close DPP (it's probably your default).
2. Open Aperture then click "Import" (top left).
3. The import screen will come up and a pointer will show you where the photos are going to be placed. Create a project for your photos. Call it Test or whatever and make sure the pointer is directed to this new project.
4. You can make a folder and drag the Project into it if you like - you can make this folder a name or date if you please - it doesn't make a difference to Aperture.
5. Now, in the Import screen on there will be several options. The first option is called "Store Files". This is the physcial location Aperture will place your files. Since this is a test go ahead and click "Choose" and then Create a New Folder on your Desktop.
6. Secect "Copy Files" so you don't disturb anything. And also check "Do not import duplicates'.
7. Now in the next option "Subfolder" choose "Image Year / Month / Day". What this will do is send any subsequent file you import into the folder you created. If there are pictures that were taken over the period of 7 days then it will create 7 folders with the photos created on each of those days.

Now, those will be your default settings. In the future all you'll ever have to do is select which project photo's will go into.

In the next option "Version Name" you can change what the photo names will be called. Apple Aperture calls all photos that are not masters (the original file) "Version" so you know that you are not fooling with the original copies (which are still on the camera or card).

I would also strongly recommend you add Meta Data too. At the very least, add your professional information just in case.

I know it's hard to move to new methods, but keep your mind open to change. I keep track of thousands and thousands of photos in three categories (personal, work and professional) and Aperture keeps me very organized.

Good luck and hope that helps.

I want to use the remote to do micro photos. I also want to upgrade my firmware. can't do either even though I have the top of the line for both products. Seems like this has been an issue for years and Canon does not want to fix it. I belong to a large camera club and was planing to show the Micro using remote.
I will certainly post this issue in our newsletter. Perhaps thats why the club members are moving away from Canon.

They suggest I send take the camera to a service depot to get the firmware update but the service centres and lot of miles and a two way ferry trip to get a simple software upgrade.
This is the year 2014 isn't it. we are not in the computer dark ages.

What camera are you using? I do microphotography with a T2i connected to a Zeiss Axiovert 25. As soon as I turn the camera on, Canon's Remote Capture software starts up and live view is just one click on the screen.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.
