Can anyone point me in the right direction to figure out which (if either) fits my needs the best?

At the risk of asking a silly question...what are your needs?

lol, well i guess it would have helped if i included that in my OP, sorry about that.

Looking for something lightweight with quick AF, bright VF, good performance with fast glass and good low light performance.

XSi has a center point that can focus with more accuracy with lenses faster than f2.8, so that may be a better choice. That said, the XS does not suck by any means. Both have a pentamirror VF, so not incredibly bright, but the XSi's is about 10% bigger. So since you mentioned both AF with fast glass and Viewfinder, I think the XSi would be better for both of those by a little bit.

XS is lighter than the XSi (I think), most of what your needs are depends on the lens. My viewfinder (XS) is bright it may not be big enough, but it is bright ;)

There is only a 25g difference between the two - probably the difference in weight of the 3" vs 2.5" LCD. Not really enough to be a deciding factor, IMO.

The viewfinders on the XS and XSI are not dim, but compared to a nice Pentaprism viewfinder like from the 40D, etc, they are not as bright. That is what I meant. The XSi viewfinder is really quite large compared to past rebels, though.

I struggled with this question myself for days. I had ordered the XS kit (new) from Amazon for $500, but found the XSi kit on Adorama (refurbished) for $549. I sent back the XS and the XSi should be here Thursday. I'm guessing $$ is the deciding factor here, so maybe that will help...

The XSI feels better in my hands...the grip is just long and deep enough for my pinky to curl ON it...on the XS my pinky would curl/sit under it...that's a big little difference...

How about a new 30D from adorama for $599? I would think it has faster AF, a much brighter VF, and great low light performance (Goes to ISO 3200)

It doesn't have all the goodies like live view, but you do get a very solid camera.

Yes, but live view wouldn't help you at all im a slight rain storm or if you dropped the camera. ;)

Is that another attempt at a burn for people who don't have a 1D?

All camera equipments comes with a price. Choose one that fits your budget and stick to it. Either body will produce excellent pictures. I don't know which lens comes in the kit. If it's the 18-55 IS, it should be fine. The next step is to play with it and to explore the functions and lighting possiblities.
The most important thing is have fun doing it.:D
