just got an "estimate" to repair my 100-400mm with it's seized barrel - a mere NZ$750 ... (they're about NZ$2800 new)

but what I'm curious about is wether anyone who has had the same issue repaired, knows what parts were needed. They've stated CY1-2833-000 (lens focus ring) & CY1-2837-000 (barrel) need replacing. Is this likely to be a "guess" and I'll be up for whatever they find once it's apart or is this a "normal" repair?

i guess the labor is the expensive part of this repair...

they've estimated 2 hours labour which I think is quite reasonable,

I've had the same repair done on mine. Twice... This is the first time I have ever hard of anyone having the same problem with that lens.

The first time was a warranty repair, even though the lens was a year old. (The camera store wrote me a new sales receipt...) The second time I had to pay for it myself. I can't find the repair reciept, but I recollect it was somewhere in the vicinity of $400 US. I had further trouble with it and took it to a local repair shop rather than sending it to Canon again. They told me it had a "guide missing" and fixed it for $150. The only way that guide could have been missing is that if it had been left out by Canon. Needless to say, I'm not too thrilled with Canon Irvine service.

Nope, but when I sent mine in for cleaning and calibration i ended up costing me $175.00, they also had to replace a part. But no barrel seizing here.

Hi ya Joeseph,

Sorry to hear about your lens. My 1-4 is with Canon N.Z. as we speak........different problem though. Not sure how urgently you need the lens back but maybe just a wee 'heads up' for you.......mine's been in there for six weeks already !!! To cut a long story short, it took four phone calls in the last two weeks to finally get it on the technicians table. ( Four, because first three times no one got back to me after saying they would......real slack service). Not the first time I've experienced very long repair times either.

Anyway, just thought I'd warn you that perhaps there might be a relatively long wait at this time ??!!

Matt.

I've done a search and there's complaints about bearings falling out but not much else - my experience was pretty much that the zoom got harder & harder to use - and after sitting for a couple of weeks I tried it again & managed to zoom out, but not back again.

cheers for that - I put my M80 (portable hard drive) in and 1D3 in at the same time, M80 because it doesn't detect the CF card quite often, and the 1D for the mirror/focus recall issues. The M80's been looked at already & they can't find anything wrong...

The 100-400's been faulty since before easter so I've not really missed it (no airshows on during winter!) hopefully they can sort it without breaking the bank... :p

Hi Matt
Unfortunately, we are well aware of the "service" Canon NZ provides, it got quite good for a while, now seems to back to it's old ways. :(

BTW, what happened to you 1-4? Did the Kea start to eat it?

We've had a half-dozen 100-400s need that done from the Lensrentals.com inventory. There's about half-a-million little ball bearings under the smooth-tighten ring (I really don''t want to go in to how I know that :-) and when they fail they score the barrel so both the internal barrel (CYI-2837) and the smooth-tighten assembly (CYI-2833, which is par of the focus ring) have to be replaced. When you change those parts, the lens has to be recalibrated on a laser system which is a $175 charge by itself in the U. S. and the two parts mentioned are each almost $200 from Canon parts in the U. S.

If you want to see the schematic of it, its here: http://f20c.com …204.5-5.6L%20IS%20USM.PDF (external link)

thanks Roger - I'd had a look at the parts diagram & couldn't figure out where all the bearings were...
Sounds like for once, Canon NZ are pricing repairs on a par with the rest of the world. :-)

Every time I look at one of these exploded drawings, I think of the numerous threads from people that want to disassemble their lenses to clean out the dust inside them...
