I would be curious also why so cheap. I might be inclined to ask if he is the original owner and to see a receipt.

Around here all the public sell forums, kijiji/craiglist people usually ask ridiculous amounts for their used gear. I've seen only 1 reasonable price for a 5D + grip and a 1DII in the last year. They were not steals but very competitive.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Usually when a super deal comes along for me, I think about it long enough that its gone, and then I dont need to think about it anymore. Ive missed a lot of good ones that way. Ive been burned a few times too, being too quick to say yes too.

I'd bring someone along if you are meeting at their place. Have the person on a cell phone talking the whole time making sure the seller is aware that your friend can call for help in seconds...

Watch the switch-a-rew... where you give hand back the camera and seller gives you a bag with a brick in it.

Meeting at the bank is the best idea - parking lot is good too. Your money is safe and video cameras are all around.

After all that... test the camera thoroughly.

Meet them in your bank. There's cameras everywhere, a security guard, etc and no one would look strangely at someone having $850 in cash.

Try out the camera, then withdraw the cash from a teller (yes, you can still do that these days) if everything's good.

But the security guard(s) may look at someone funny whose trying out a camera in a bank.

Someone is selling a 5D with grip for $800.00 here. Didn't write to the guy asking about it but it doesn't say anything about charger, battery, etc. http://honolulu.craigslist.org/big/pho/1283336074.html (external link)

Take Care,

I bought my 5D for 830 EURO. it was 2,5 years old.. so I don't think the amount you mention is too good to be true

btw.. there is no way to check the amount of clicks on a 5D, without sending it to Canon.

so if he says 17.000 it can well be 100.000... If the person seems reliable you could give him the benefit of the doubt ;)

So I 'd say if it still looks good go for it. You can't know the real amount of clicks so yeah.. there is the problem with buying a 5D secondhand..

and most sellers will ofcourse mention a lower number than the actual amount

How'd you come across that deal?

I only check craigslist & the forums here.

I don't believe I have ever seen a bigger collention of paranoid people, anywhere. One hyped up news story about some freak using CL to trap women and everybody goes hyper. What a hoot.

Just wait for the day you're ripped off and then we'll see what you say to the situation.

There are so many scams on CL nowadays though. There used to be one that went around in many CL markets for a 5D/16-35 for $1500; I almost thought it was legit for a while. For any deal that sounds a little too good to be true I'd definitley meet in a public place - personally I would use a shopping mall or a big box store.
