I shoot as part of a sports photo group which happens to be all Nikon. Is there any way to change my image file name from IMG to my initials? All the Nikon shooters have done this, but I can't find a way to change the letters on my 40D in any resource I have. Am I not looking in the right places?
Our cards are all downloaded immediately after a game and there's no chance to do it in PP.

Not in camera, as far as I know. Easy DURING download if you are doing the D/L but not necessarily for someone else unless you explain to them.

Change YOUR name to I.M. Good :D

Not knocking nikon at all. But they have a lot of "Oooooo" features. But really have no strong point. Such as your example. Does it really matter what the files are named in the camera? It can be changed automatically when they are moved to the computer. In essence the final result is the same thing. They are personalized before anything can be done with them.

LOL!!! Downloads are by the group. I already get some name ribbing. But my IMG's are consistently the best shots.

how can I cause the name change automatically on download without any intervention?

It is part of the software. Im on my work computer right now so cant give an exact place. I dont use it so I cant tell by memory. But see it when the window pops open when I put in the card.

What software are you useing for the transfer?

Mark1 - I think he wants to have the camera do it, so that when it is downloaded by someone else, it will already have his initials before it gets to any card reader. Don't think that can be done.

As far as I can remember it can't be done on the 40D. Don't have the camera on hand right now though, but I'm pretty sure.

Interesting, that.

If it's your 40D and you have entered "owner" or copyright or some such information so they're part of the IPTC/EXIF data automatically, then whoever downloads your card could find out who shot them with some EXIF reader and rename them - your info would be in the metadata but not the filename. Not quite what you want but the best you can hope for :(

Yeah I'm quite positive the only Canon cameras that can do that are the 1Series. I was desperately trying to find out this same information because I ran into image overlap on my sequences and it totally screwed up my aperture library. I had to go back and separate and rename the files by hand.

If you're using Lightroom you can seperate out photos by Camera Model, Serial Number, and etc :) Should be no problem....

Unless someone else in the group's initials are IMG, is it a problem? I understand that it'd be nice in this situation, but honestly I'm glad Canon didn't spend any time putting a useless (IMO) feature like this on my 40D. I use Bridge to automatically rename my files when they're imported from my card.
