Somebody had to say it.

Depends on what you're using it for. It's sharp, the IS works well, and has a very nice range. Not great in low light if you're trying to stop action, it just isn't fast enough... but it is a nice affordable tele. For general use, it's a great lens... just don't expect something like shooting sports at night to be great and you'll be fine. The 70-300 IS is the best of the 70-300(ish) lenses by far.

The 75-300 lenses are generally reported to be soft across most of the zoom range and very soft past 200mm. Given the modest price difference, the 70-300 IS is a much better lens value.

is the 75-300 is usm lens any good? any experience? i just purchased one and have yet to recieve it and was wondering if i made a good purchase.

Next time you plan to order a lens perhaps ask questions and do research before placing the order. There seems to be a cart / horse sequence issue here.

errrr...shouldn't you have asked these questions BEFORE you went out and made the purchase?!! lol that cracked me up.

personally, I'd have advised you to get the much better 70-200 mm f4 L, but the 75-300 is an awful lens. the 70-300 mm IS is better, but no match for the 70-200.

well it kinda went like this . i did some research and found good reviews from users. compared the prices round . and found that im paying less than half. i have been using other brands in the same range and found that i like the regular canon 75-300 for my use. but i found this lens and sold the other one and replaced with this one .
the lens is going to be use for outdoors mostly so is fast enough for me . i do have a tamron 28- 105 2.8 pro. for indoors use.

well thats a perfectly fair comment. also, your 75-300 mm will challenge your skills, too...shhot at anywhere between f8 and f11 you might get good results, crank up the iso to get a decent shutter speed and maybe use some noise reduction software to compensate for the noise?

I have been fairly happy with my 75-300mm IS f4-5.6. For the price, it's a nice lens!

There must be a whole bunch of "bad copies" of the 75-300 IS USM lens out there because the one my wife uses produces great images. This is in the hands of someone who doesn't know the difference between P and Av and is shooting on an older D60 body.

If you take the time to understand the limitations of the lens you will do just fine with it.

I think the biggest problem a lot of people have with this lens is that it doesn't have a red ring on it...

I borrowed one of those lens from a friend for a 2-week Safari to Kenya and Tanzania. I used that lens almost exclusively shooting hand held from a Land Cruiser. The IS is very good and buys you about 3-stops in motion reduction. It may not be tack sharp at 300mm, but for the price it's a good day. I'll let you judge for yourself. You can view some of my photos at: http://brownwarbler.com/africa/index.htm (external link)

I used this lens on a 50D.

For what my opinion is worth, it isn't that bad of a lens. I find it very susceptible to camera shake, but I have found it a good learning experience for me, and I have taken many shots that are pretty good (subjective I know). I have just purchased a new lens but I do expect to have some occasional use for the the 75-300
