If they replace the 5D I will pick one up just the second that the price drops.. :D :D .. I want that dang camera!!

sari

Ahahahaa.. you have good taste! But kiss that Tamron goodbye.. it is a digital 1.6X-only lens. (not saying this because of prejudice either.. would have said the same thing to a Canon EF-S owner, and my much loved 10-22 was a casualty of that upgrade decision..)

Your 28-105 will be nice.. it is a great focal length. However the 5D will be absolutely brutal to it.. you'll get the feeling it never looks sharp only because you are able to blow up an image so much more than with the XT.

The L and the 50 (barring its subpar focus drive) will shine though...

Have a good day today Sari...though I'm not sure what a bartender does during the day?

I have insomnia...I WANT to be asleep but I can't ....so now I'm just facing the "fear the crickets" I apparently have just acquired...

PG: I absolutely detest not being able to sleep when I need to as well.. it does happen to me.

"So tired that I can't sleep" - yes, true. Happens to me. Hate it. Go work on your flash technique.

Sari: I'm on the other end of the world, our time zones are different, so 'night shift on POTN' would actually be quite reasonable hours for me while the US is largely asleep. It's still a while from midnight here.

And 4 hours of sleep and you can still work a customer service position - I'd bite whoever messed up or gave me a hard time! You have my respect for being able to go in and still smile :)

I'm too tired to DO anything. But I did find a sticky on basic technique on the lighting section. What I really want to know is not technique (though the thread is interesting) but how to use all the functions on the 580! But not tonight, or this morning or whatever....

Sari never did say what a bartender does in the morning...

MORNING WU! Did you rest well last night?
It was rather dull around here (though we did discuss photography again...). Wool checked in for probably 10 min. Claire never came at all (at least while I was on)...and Lightstream's crickets are rapidly taking over...

You will have to RTFM then ;)

I am not very familiar with the 580EX's control set, think it is different from the 430EX I have. But basically, all I ever do is

Load batteries - open side door and follow diagram
Turn it on - move power switch
Set high speed sync - press button with H next to lightning bolt
Test flash - press red PILOT button
Pull down diffuser panel - pull gently
Adjust flash angle - press button at side and move the head
Set slave mode for ST-E2 remote trigger operation - move switch at the base to SLAVE

What else is there?

I slept about an hour. Very early in the evening the keyboard on the laptop quit and I couldn't get my other one to work either. No work. No play. wired but not wanting to do housework. Didn't take paperwork home cause I wanted to chill and maybe write something pleasant, do a bit of research.. . .

I was able to read what was going on but gave up after a while

I did read the (expletive deleted) manual. I mentioned that. I think it was written in Greek.

I hate computer problems!

So, did you use paper/pencil to write something pleasant? (remember those days  )
(I think I have a mechanical pencil somewhere in the house... )

OK, OK. Won't tease you any more about the flash or the crickets.

TBH I glanced through my manual and then I fumbled my way through the flash control panel. Only thing I can't remember are what each of the CFNs representing.

Japanese is probably a better guess. :D

Well, if you read Japanese, I'll send you the manual  Honestly, there are more buttons and functions on this than any flash I've ever seen. I'll figure it out, probably right before an emergency portrait session (the only portraits I really ever do) or a double emergency wedding (I HATE photo-ing weddings) or a triple emergency...well, actually, there's nothing I hate worse than doing weddings. While they are lovely, and people want the photos, no one wants to actually pose for them...I find it very trying on the patience. So, eventually I'll figure it out. (I work best under pressure....once I had to learn to play Pachabel's Canon, Ave Maria and two other classical pieces, don't remember now, in 2 days, for a wedding......wait there IS something I hate worse than photo-ing weddings...and that's playing the piano for them   )
