here, it very very slightly missed but the wind was waving ALL those leaves, so I'm wondering if any camera could have made it through there
and well, here's one of my favorite shots of the day ![]()

Permagrin High Priestess of all I survey 77,915 posts Likes: 21 Joined Aug 2006 Location: day dreamin' More info | You know Wool, it's probably the most complicated camera I've ever used. When I had the 2n, the dials/buttons combinations for everything frustrated me a great deal and I felt like it was complicated. This one removes all that...but it reminds me of film days in a way. For different situations (even closely following one another) different AF settings need to happen. (I used my AF search OFF most of the day, with great success, but sometimes I had to turn it ON, which I don't like at all because it hunts through the whole range of the lens, slowing AF down, or MF it to the area I wanted...if I kept AF search off.) There's just a lot of things that are left up to the photographer to adjust...like I said, it just reminds me of the old slr's in that way. You have TOTAL control. But if someone doesn't want that, I can see where it would frustrate them. With birding on the 2n, you could set your settings and be done with it except maybe exposure comp or iso. Not with this one, not at all. But it's getting easier, as I remember what to do. .. It's Permie's world, we just live in it! ~CDS

There are a whole bunch of people that have decided that if Rob Galbraith says there are issues with the camera, then by default every copy must be defective. I only played with the Mk3 for about 45 minutes to an hour the other day...but the first thing I noticed about it was it isn't just a souped up Mk2n...there are distinct differences...I suspect it is going to take me some time to learn the ins, the outs and all the secret little quirks....provided I even decide I want to go that route. Hell...I think I still learn little things with the Mk2n every time I shoot. People that know me call me Dan

T.D. Moderator More info | MOOOOO!!! Everyone! Permagrin wrote in post #3470842 evening everyone! Heyguesswhat? The MKIII STILL AF's with the 400mm+2xtc+1.4xtc Very cool! Permagrin wrote in post #3470861 I don't know yet...I just got home. I had it mounted on a tripod to shoot a green heron (MY FIRST EVER!) but the dumb thing was SO FAR AWAY...so first I put both tc's on the 300 but it wasn't far enough and then I put them both on the 400 and had Dan MF it for me and it was just by accident that I found out it AF'd too but every time I pushed the shutter button (remote shutter) it still bounced everything on the tripod... anyway... We had a nice day birding...got some lovely (I hope) shots of the cedar waxwings and kildeer and some osprey shots but who knows how they turned out. As far as the green heron goes, I'm NOT counting on those shots to turn out... now off to catch up Were you at WF? Permagrin wrote in post #3470905 Nice Fleurs, Scott and Wu ![]() I really like this shot...if this was with the 24-105, then all those people who say it has lousy bokeh, obviously don't know how to use it! this one is my favorite of the bug shots! That's actually the 30D and the 100-400 (Did I mis-state it earlier? Woolburr wrote in post #3471079 For some reason the AF missed the target on this one and caught the safety screen above the dugout. I was wandering around shooting from different spots in the park to see some different vantage points. I just liked how it turned out.
Canon EOS 1D Mark II N ,Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM 1/640s f/4.0 at 280.0mm iso100 Tamron SP Pro 1.4x TC Wool, I LOVE this shot!! Very beautiful. I've had the same thing happen, but have never ended up with something this fantastic. thomascanty wrote in post #3471132 It's a rental. My car is in the shop getting a new rear bumper and driver's seat because of that accident I was in back in May. The insurance company authorized me for a mid-sized rental car, but Hertz didn't have one available when I was there, so they gave me a free upgrade to a Jeep Liberty 4x4, just like Puddles'. Ahh, got it. Cool. Permagrin wrote in post #3471144 okay Scott, here's a straight from the camera (no adjustments) shot with the MKIII, 400f5.6, 1.4 & 2x tc's on a tripod. and TD (or anyone who knows) can you ID the bird with the orange bill (I don't have a better photo, it's from a crop of the above shot)? It wasn't a green heron and it sort of looks like a cormorant but not the one in my bird book...so, sigh. I can't add the green heron to my lifebook thingy but I could add this if I knew what it was.
and Wool, all the info is showing up as 560mm at f10...weird. I concur on the juvie double crested cormorant ID. Is this the "Green Heron" shot? Athena wrote in post #3471268 TD - nice lizzie. I got to see it in Permie's quote. Thanks Athena! Permagrin wrote in post #3471424 I've decided to not worry about my camera...it behaved SO well today (and it was solely a birding day) the bushes were waving in front of this guy and it nailed the focus here, it very very slightly missed but the wind was waving ALL those leaves, so I'm wondering if any camera could have made it through there and well, here's one of my favorite shots of the day ![]()
Perm, I'm so glad to hear this. I really have wondered if there aren't a combination of things going on. Primarily, I wonder if the settings just aren't being adjusted properly. This camera is so complex. There certainly could be problems, but I know that "overthinking" a problem can certainly compound it.

Hell...I think I still learn little things with the Mk2n every time I shoot. THANK YOU!!! I've been saying this ever since the MkIII came out. It's not another Mk2n. It's a completely different animal. You can't just assume that the things, parameters, hard/software will be identical on the Mk3 just because it's got the same shape! It's all new. There IS a learning curve.... you have to learn the camera all over again. It's not like the shift from the Mk2 to the Mk2n, wherein the changes were slight. It's a massive change. People keep saying, "There's something all wrong... it won't work like my Mk2n" Correct! It won't! Because it's not a Mk2n!!! I tend to ramble. Feel free to put me on ignore.
