Oh, that whole IS vs. aperture thing is simple if you just remember that IS allows you to hand hold at SLOW shutter speeds. When you shoot moving targets, you want a FAST shutter speed.

Precisely.. more good wisdom here :)

The n00bs tend to equate "a stop is a stop" - no not reallllllllly.

That's exactly how I think of it Liza.

Thanks for saying it so simply.

The simplest way to think of it is this...Shutter speed controls subject movements. IS helps control photographer movement.

Even simpler! Little things like this conversation really help me improve my skills. Even though I knew this, it helps a ton just to talk about it and hear others talk about it.

Thanks everyone!

I had thought that was common knowledge ??? I guess not.

You would be amazed at what some people have no concept of....there are plenty of green box and runningman photographers floating around that have no clue.

I guess I'm still a newb, because I don't know what those two terms mean.

Ahhh, those who do not understand the True Nature of the beast ;)

(not saying those with fast glass don't understand - but they tend to be the ones who have analyzed the situation and their needs and come to a conclusion IS is not needed, vs the n00b who thinks it is the silver bullet)

Worse is the n00b that will come in, turn on IS, SHAKE the camera or jump up and down while trying to take a shot...... that is not how you test IS, no matter what the fancy commercials with people doing that say!

hey there's nothing wrong with that green box. never used it myself but I am sure some have got plenty of good photos out of it.

When I first got the camera I had set it on the green box, tried to change the focus point and couldn't. Since then never used it, never want to either.

I discovered something about the green box on our XTi that I bought for work recently. It chooses the ISO automatically! I couldn't believe it!

I shoot strictly on AV and Manual, but was showing someone else how to use it. I was surprised to see AUTO in the ISO area. Who knew?!

There is also mountain and flower to go with the other two....plenty of people shoot with those features alone. The get real frustrated when they can't get any reception on Tv.

When I first got the camera I had set it on the green box, tried to change the focus point and couldn't. Since then never used it, never want to either.

I find it better to start n00bs off in Program AE, because it will set the exposure (the toughest part for many of them) while still allowing them control of all camera functions. Essentially it is auto-exposure, but-lets-you-do-everything-else-your-way. I started in P.

DOF control, exposure, and so on are important concepts - I introduce them to Av, Tv and M after they have become comfortable with the camera. I want them to be able to take some pics to whet their interest first without having to sit through lectures and master the different concepts.

I find if I overload them at the start you tend to 'lose' some of them straight away and kill the interest. The signs are when they start getting defensive or complain about why it has to be so hard.

For those who never graduate to the advanced modes, it is also possible they may likely never have taken it up in the first place, even if started out that way. (again I know some like that.. I just live and let live). I recently hooked someone up with an S3 IS because they wanted a LOOOOOOONG zoom. I suspect the S3 will live its life out in green box auto mode, though.

You have no control at all in those modes...the camera uses a set of predefined parameters...and what you get is what the camera gives you.
