I've never seen an albino oscar...weird. What do you keep in the tank with it? We used to have three of the regular ones when I was growing up...they ate everything else in the tank except the plecostomus catfish....

It's interesting looking! white with light orange markings! got a pinkish colored catfish in there and another tiny African cichlid that gets up to about 4 inches long ...

this little guy is kind of goofy! darn thing likes to lay on its side as if he was trying to take a nap ...

thought he was sick so I called the pet shop and the girl laughed and said that's normal for these guys!

it's the strangest thing to see him laying on his side ... just can't get the camera angle right to shoot this behavior ...

Nikon's got a few good primes. As I told you the other day, I personally watched my dealer use a D80 with Nikkor 50/1.8 AF-D to cream a Canon 50/1.4. BLEAH.

They are not so strong in the ultrawide, zoom, tele, USM (theirs is SWM) and IS departments though. Their strength, I feel, lies in the classical primes, because of their long heritage. This is where the 'we didn't change the mount and therefore did not need to change the optical formula' heritage shows through. However, by not changing the mount, one needs to navigate an entire compatibility chart just to figure out WTF can be mounted without actually causing damage to the camera.

Yes, when I was first researching which dslr camera to go with, I found it was not so easy to tell what lenses were the decent ones, with Nikon...they're ALL expensive

Funny DD....I would have thought it was sick too! I've never seen one do that either. Hopefully both it and the cichlid will grow at the same rate and tolerate each other....wonder how the catfish will do?

Odd.. at least in my neck of the woods, the small Nikkor primes are cheaper than the Canon versions. Their 85/1.8 is $100 cheaper straight off the bat - no USM though! I'd rather have USM.

Glad you came over to the Canon side.. if not we might not have met :)

That was sweet (there are many friendships on the forum that I've glad I've made since I went canon!...it's a bonus for sure :) ). And yes, I'm glad I went canon...ISO handling is the best reason. I can live w/o weather sealing (though I'd prefer not to) on the smaller bodies but I HATE noise (unless of course I want it for effect...). So any noise bothers me. I guess I should have said they are all expensive...I just found most of them (comparable) to be more than their canon counter parts. Now Leica is expensive...I still can't get over how much a 1.4x teleconverter costs... :)

I was thinking about the issue, because my dealer was telling me "Pity we didn't get you in time to stop you from going Canon" - and I was thinking that I would probably have missed out on the good people I know from here. There are also many more I know who don't keep up with the RRTP thread. Good thing I went Canon, really.

I am also 'noise-free freak' - I noticed noise on one of Canon's very early generation P&S, even before anybody had figured out what it was! I remember asking "Why are the blue skies 'speckled' in the picture?" this was many years before I'd ever even consider a DSLR!

Leica borders on the crazy. There is quality, yes. But to pay so much more for so little incremental improvement if any at all? Especially improvement which would be hardly even noticeable? To be honest I probably couldn't tell a Summilux R 50/1.4 from a Canon 50/1.4 even if it bit me. I'll pay for improvement I can see, feel and use, but not otherwise...

To the Tupperware gang:

Although I'm really not a full-fledged mamber of this group, I feel you've all been very tolerant of my occasional intrusions. I'm not that skilled at chit-chat, and I don't pretend to understand half ofwhat you're discussing ak any one point**. Still, I feel I've gotten to know you all just a bit better from my occasional forays into Tupperware land, and therefore ask that you please accept my wishes for a wonderful Christmas (if appropriate---otherwise, Holilday).

(**I gather some of you are related.....maybe even married. There are twins involved somehow, real or imagined. Some of you vacation together, or someday hope to, etc., etc.. There's a lot of inside information floating around here, and it's too confusing for someone who hasn't read every word on every page.)

Anyway, Merry Christmas from a not-quite Tupperwarer.

Thos.

... the catfish looks like it has been sampled ... suppose I can undestand it ...
especially since I too like to eat fresh catfish once in a while

... the African cichlid is a lot smaller ... who knows ... I just didn't want the oscar cichlid to be lonely (if he wanted company)

Do you (or anyone on this thread) know anything about the Canon 100-300 L (not the non-L version)? It's discontinued but a darn good price...about the same as a canon teleconverter (which I need to pick up to extend my lens until I pick up the prime lens in the spring). I just wondered if it'd work (I really have mixed feelings about tc's) to tide me over.

Oh Tom, you are a Tupperwarer (if there is such a thing) and Merry Christmas back to you! Hope you and your wife have a very happy holiday as well!

(Some of us are married, some are twins and some are adopted...some are planning vacations together so you've followed it pretty well :)...who besides a genuine T would be able to do that  ?)

Thank you! Merry Christmas back at you.
Somehow, I think even if you read every word, you might be confused. Even we are. :)
Personally, I think it is great having you around! Wise, charming, and a great sense of humor make you a natural for a Tupper! :D "Tolerant" of our strangeness is a big plus, too;)

I hope your holiday is spectacular! Are you making cinnamon rolls for your lovely bride tomorrow?

Hmm- looks like sis said it better. :)

If you can live with the tremendously slow DC motor and push/pull (which you did with the 1-4) it may be do-able. I would still recommend you get the Official Canon TC though, because that way if anything goes wrong, go back to them and complain, and they have no excuse. I will be picking up the Real Thing sometime next year.

I considered this lens just shortly before the 70-300 IS (conventional non-DO) came into existence. The 70-300 won hands down.

(that's funny, I was just thinking the same thing, only opposite...)

But Tom's got a good idea and I'm going to run with it:

Merry Christmas (or happy holidays) to the rest of you! I'm hoping you'll have a very happy holiday, complete with happy memories (and lots of photographs). Enjoy the time well spent with families and friends!

Lisa

PG: Oh yeah.. a couple more thoughts -

The 724ISL build quality, non-extending front end and the ring USM are awesome when you're shooting on the street. Often, I need to catch a subject unawares (disliking the chilling "Why the he11 are you pointing that at me" glare, which ruins a candid shot), so I need to act innocent and bring the lens up *FAST*. Waiting for the front end to extend.. naah fergetaboutit. Ring USM rules.

Also when being bumped about in a crowd, the build quality offers peace of mind. With the 70-300, the inner barrel is loose, plus the hood gets hit a lot (crowds are where I REALLY believe in hoods), which transfers the impact to the not-so-sturdy barrel to begin with. Yikes.

If your day's already begun and you don't have time to check in.. all the best.. have a good one!
