First I put my nifty fifty on because it was on my desk. Just to be sure though I then threw my 35L on. Both work perfectly on my 5D, so it's definitely body related.

Hi, don't know where to post this, thought this was the appropriate area?

Anyway, I doing research on a photographic firm that was based in Melbourne, Australia under the name of "Johnstone & O'Shannessy", back in the late 1800's.

I do know a bit about the firm and was hoping if anyone around the the traps knew of, or had family photos done by them.

A recent favorite. :)

And I can see why. Everything about this image works well. ;)

I have received my Canon Rebel 2000 bought on ebay, and it is unusable - shutter is all bent and cracked, eyepiece badly scratched. I am surprised - this was my first bad purchase on ebay in many years and probably >100 items purchased.

Anyway, I wanted something more usable with my 135L lens, for FF portraits, and was deciding between Canon EOS-5 / A2 and Elan 7. Elan 7 sounded better in terms of modern (E-TTL) flash support, in case I need a fill-in flash, but EOS-5 was apparently more professionally done, and can go down to 1/8000s (good idea when shooting at f/2 aperture outdoors). I saw quite a few reasonably priced A2/A2E on ebay, but after some reading I realized that it doesn't show proper metering in manual exposure mode (only + or -). I just stumbled upon the non-North American model EOS-5 for around 100$ (from UK), and ordered it. (EOS-5 does seem to meter under/over exposure properly).

I am still not sure if I will manage to get sharp shots with 135L at f/2.0 with this semi-pro camera (EOS-5). It doesn't have a split prism, only matte screen. I wear glasses (astigmatism, so diopter correction is not an option) - will I be able to focus accurately my 135L? And how about AF on EOS-5 - I read it has no cross-like AF sensors, only horizontal - will it be accurate with 135L?

Any other EOS-5 tips?

A separate issue - I was deciding on the best film to use with EOS-5 + 135L combination for outdoor portraits, and Kodak Portra 160 (I believe it is the new, unified version) seems to be the best choice, and is reasonably priced (6$ on B&H). Am I right here?

Thanks!

A flexible film would also be the Fuji 400h and Portra 400, both are exceptionally flexible in that you can shoot them as far down as 100iso and still get great images with normal development, you can also shoot them much higher than 400 as well.

I preferred Fuji 160S to Portra 160, but that's a hugely personal opinion.

I have an A2e and the focus is exceptionally accurate. Fast, not so much....

Just got 2 rolls of 35mm Velvia back from my Madagasar trip. Good news is that they came out awesome! Bad news is that the lab scans are pretty meh... Swapping between a computer screen and a projection makes me want to cry!

While I spend some time trying to get the rest of the scans looking good, here's some classic velvia:

And oops... exposure is hard with the A2e's half assed exposure scale.

This has been my experience as well. The Elan II/IIe actually had a faster more advanced focus system, but the A2/A2e had a more Pro oriented body.
You couldn't go too far wrong with either. ;)

Jason those all have a very very distinct Velvia look to them. Poor scans or not, they are awesome.

Now I see why you wanted to keep the camera instead of selling it to me! Haha, glad you had a great trip!

Let it be known, this mistake shall never be made again.

I forever curse the RB67's "Mirror Lock Up" mode on the lens. I shall now put tape over it and never have that switch moved again.

Oooh bummer! Well we've all made mistakes (I know I've made my share with medium format cameras)

You learn quickly though.
