I just got a new 5D II from a reputable dealer. The body number on the camera starts 977XXX and the number appearing in Canon ZoomBrowser is 930XXX. The rest of the digits are also different. Am I missing something, or is this wrong?

The firmware is 1.1.0

Is the camera working right? Is there a reason your are bothered by this? Do you check the vin numbers on your cars too? Putting my most cynical hat on, perhaps you got a referb unit. If it is really bothering you, call Canon. Better than asking here.

If I had a mismatch on the VIN numbers on my car I'd be really worried. I'd be looking for body welds, false documentation, and other signs of write-off damage. I don't think this was a good example!

Canon do replace parts and create mismatches. Usually they give you documentation to explain why. I had a 400mm F/5.6 repaired and they had to replace the case which they damaged. It has a different serial number from originall and they provided a document explaining why.

Its very unlikely that the reason for the mismatch is caused by anyone other than Canon, but you are entitled to know whether you bought a new body or a refurb.

The guy has a right to be worried in case of warranty work later, I would contact Canon.

Somebody else had a similar issue recently.

Have you called Canon to discuss?

Probably Canon worked on it. My 70-200f4 lens had it's whole rear housing replaced along with the stamped serial number. The gave me the old housing back incase I needed work done and for insurance purposes.

Having worked in manufacturing for a few year, I know that stuff gets reworked in the factory because it failed QC. This stuff usually is the best stuff leaving to door because it got caught, and fixed. Of course this is much different than a refurb though. Bottom line though either case is if it carries the full Canon backing. Like mentioned, give them a call, make sure the number is a US and new number.

As to the bad example..... yeah I guess. But I also belong to a few car collector clubs, and I can't think of one of these most anal people who when picking up a new car check all the vin numbers when picking up a brand new car. When buying a collectable, sure. But then were talking spending high 5 and 6 figures. Perhaps I am just a footloose guy, buy I never check the that the serial numbers match on my tvs, stereo equipment, appliances or what ever.... never had the thought. Usually a receipt and a warranty card has been enough. Go figure.... guess I will check more often now.

The guy spent close to $3000 for a camera. I think he has a right to post the question here. If it bothers you then don't reply.
