Hi I have recently purchased a 580EX II and no want to get it off camera. However, I dont know where to start.

I will be using it for both my mountain bike photography and portrait/fashion work I have recently started getting into.

Any suggestions/tips?

Phil

There's a hojillion ways mate :)

Pocket Wizards, cactus triggers (ebay triggers?), off camera shoe cord, IR triggers.

It really comes down to "How much £££ you're willing to spend" and how far away you need to be from your flash.

The cord would probably be the cheapest option and work ok for the portraiture, but it's limiting and would be less than ideal for the biking.

OK well how about if I said on a budget and would prefer not to have cables everywhere especially when biking!

There's a review here for the CTR-301 triggers that are quite cheap and maybe worth looking into?

I've just ordered a set from an amazon seller yesterday. £15, which is cheaper than the off camera shoe cord thingy and should give more range. If it doesn't work I mod them to be a cable with some cat5 I've got lying around and it's still cheaper than the off camera shoe cord.

So far I've been using the flash's optical trigger and bouncing the built-in camera flash, hopefully this should improve matters.
