Hello guys, im looking into buying a camera as i have never owned a DSLR before. I dont know whether i should buy a 450D or a 500D, i was so close to buying a 500D the other day but i realised that i should ask someone with some knowledge first. Yes, i know its my first camera but i dont want to buy a beginner 1000D because if i do i want be buying a second camera for a very long time, so i thought ill get a better one and keep it for longer time. Price isnt an issue, im just wondering which one is generally a better camera as in quality, durability, etc.. If you think that there is a better camera i should buy, please tell me but not anything crazy.

If anyone can help me, it will be much appreciated, thank you

As of now, you should look into getting a used 40D. Great bang for the buck, and feels a lot better to hold than the rebel series.

You shouldn't ask if one body is better than the other right off the bat.

DSLRs these days are very capable.
You should just pick up a body, the 40D, as well as the 500D are both good.
Pick up a body, then it's good glass is what you're supposed to be looking into, which is what gives you quality images.

does that mean that the 500D and the 40D both have the same capabilities?

all the Canon models have different features - do you want or need video? do you like more megapixels (for cropping) ? high FPS? large size? smaller size? - go to a store and handle them, look at what you need (including your budget) then decide

You said it for me. I was too lazy to reply such.

I think OP needs to do some homework on dslrs before relying on others to tell him/her what he/she needs.

Go to google and search for reviews on each model. You will learn a lot more about what is best for "your" type of photography. Be warned; it can become addictive!

Only get the 500D if video is important to you. It is to me, so it replaced my 400D, but ymmv.

even in my average sized hands, the Rebel felt small and toyish to me. some people will tell you to add a battery grip to make it feel better. i don't subscribe to that.

the Rebels use a single wheel to change functions, along with a "shift" button. the XXd+ series use 2 buttons. it was another thing I hated about the Rebels.

Any of Canons cameras are capable of producing some great images.

the 40d is without a doubt the best value on the market right now.

you say money is no object but I have to think that can't be completely true. after you buy your camera body, how much money will you have for lenses? accessories? flash stuff? filters? etc.....

if you have checked out the 500D at a store and compared features just go ahead and get it. You may use the video more than you think - weddings, summer events, family stuff etc. All the reviews say the image quality is superb

I am EXTREMELY happy with the video image quality on my T1i. It doesn't replace a standalone video camcorder, but I love the option of shooting great looking short videos on a whim. Once you get used to manually focussing (AF is noisy), its a piece of cake. Its an option that you use more knowing that you have it. I enjoy it so much that if and when I do upgrade my body, I'm almost assured of moving to a 5dmarkII so that I can retain the video capability.
