Hi All,

I'm new here..I just upgrade my 450D to 50D. Feel nice with the grip.
The LCD is wow, but when I transfered the image to the notebook, the result is not clear and bright as in the LCD. Is that normal or something wrong with my 50D ?

I'm using 17-55, and 50 1.8, back then using 450D the image was just the same between LCD and notebook, even when I used PS Standard. Now, my pic in notebook feel very neutral. I already did some customize with PS, but still I'm not satisfied with result.

Please advice..

Thanks.

Are you shooting RAW or jpeg? If I'm not mistaken, if shooting RAW, when you view the image on your lcd, any picture style that is selected in your menu will be applied; but when uploaded to your computer, it will be without any adjustments. You have to make all adjustments yourself. You always have to apply a little sharpening and color saturation.

Another possibility is that notebook screens cannot be calibrated (as far as I know; if I'm wrong please let me know b/c I would love to calibrate mine). So colors may be off and look a little flat.

Keep in mind that even a blurry image will look pretty sharp on a three-inch screen. Are you zooming in when viewing on the LCD to look at detail?

Thank you. bw!

Hi pantherphotos,

I'm using both...hm..I think PS also applied with transfered image.
Also I'm seeing other 50D photos are not flat with this notebook..

HI Mike,
Yes, I agree with the blurry thing, but I do zoom at LCD and the sharp is fine. Only the color is different between LCD and notebook, it's flat..

Make sure both notebook and camera are set to sRGB. If flat one may be set to aRGB.

No problem I don't think..the 50D's LCD screen is just VERY very colorful and sharp due to how many pixels are crammed into that size. No matter what, the pic will look good there. Same thing on mine compared to the real photo on the PC.

I don't think anything's wrong. But I do agree that seeing it on the LCD is little deceiving because it almost always looks better than the real thing does...

I had the same issues when I first got my 50D but after awhile I got pretty good at identifying a good image or a so so image when viewing them on the 50D screen. It's just the opposite on my MkIII screen...sometimes I think the image is bad until I upload to the computer and it would look better than on the camera's screen. The 50D screen is way better than the MkIII screen.

The standard LCD brightness setting is very bright. I open the same picture in my camera and compare the brightness to what I see on screen. Then, I adjust the LCD brightness to 3 and it's close to my screen now. My screen is calibrated btw.
If you check the histogram and they looked ok, you should be fine. Three questions:
1) what screen of your computer?
2) is it calibrated?
3) can you post a picture that you think it's flat?

We can't really tell if there is anything wrong with the pictures unless we see them, otherwise, it's a shot in the dark.

the pic histogram that I shoot won't reach the right (bright) side, I also tried user def PS still no luck with that.
1) what screen of your computer?
it's notebook XGA Matte LCD Screen
2) is it calibrated?
I can set the brightness, tried that still flat. With 450D I didn't need to calibrate the LCD to get the exact colours..
3) can you post a picture that you think it's flat?

the pooh colour should be yellow, but it's look pale at that pic, the box white also looks little bit grey to me..the bed sheet also little bit pale
I shoot with Portrait PS, RAW, and then converted it to JPEG with DPP, and resize with PS3. No adjustment.

The problem is..I couldn't tell the image I take will be good or not until I transfer to the notebook. The image in 50D LCD is so great, bright and clear.
With my 450D (already sold that.. :( ) I can tell whether the image good enough or not in the LCD. Should I go to the Canon service for checking ?

I think shooting in Portrait Picture Style is the problem. Try shooting in Standard or Neutral.

To OP: questiosn--
1) What lighting setup you have for the shot? I saw the shutter speed is 0.8 sec.
2) Also, what white balance you used for this, I could not find it at all.
3) This picture does not looked flat to me. Can you be more specific what you meant by flat?
Here are some of my humble opinions.
From your picture, I don't see anything wrong with your equipment, so far. The color is off from your screen may not be off because
1) your screen is not calibrated
2) what lighting you use for the shot will affect the color
3) if you applied proper WB
As for pushing histogram to the right, I really don't think is correct for this picture. The majority of this picture's pixels are above mid tone and I don't see a lot of WHITE subject in your picture, why do you think you need them to be at high tone?
Also, try another shot with AV mode and set the style to Neutral. Make sure to provide lighting and WB info and we will go from there.
