does the diopter adjustment affect sharpness of photos on the 50d
i adjusted mine and i am wondering if my less than optimal eyesight is throwing the camera off
when i shoot with the sigma 18-200 attached all the images seem to be soft while the same lens on my rebel xt is very sharp
how do i restore it to the factory diopter setting

Dioter setting only affects sharpness in viewfinder not on LCD or on final photo and should be the same for any lens attached. Could try micro-adjustment of focus for that lens. Presume other lenses tried are sharp and that you've eliminated other variables by using stable platform etc.

Diopter does not affect the image. Try using live view instead of the viewfinder to see if the results are the same.

Nope the diopter just affects what you see through the view finder.

Can be a few reasons for your images looking soft on the 50d but not on your XT. Have a look at threads on AF microadjust...

The diopter setting won't affect the focal ability of the camera and lens. They work completely independent of each other.

The viewer is for your benefit.

The problem is something else. However, you should still adjust the diopter until it suits your view.

If the picture looks in focus to your eye, but comes out blurry, it could be many different variables.

Are you holding as still as possible?

Have you tried a tripod vs. handheld on the same shot? Set your camera on a tripod and use a self timer. Take a picture of something, and then take the exact same picture with the same settings but this time handhold the camera. See if there's a difference.

Post a sample.

Thank you. bw!

Have you tried doing the micro-focus adjust procedure yet? One of the better features of the 50D.

If it turns out it's not the lens simply not liking the default settings on your body, the diopter adjustment wheel has a little raised portion which needs to be aligned with the + sign on the body.

I hope this doesn't turn into a case of hand holding, indoors, no flash, with a slow lens, etc. :)

First of all, you would need to be nearing 1/1000 to stop such action. Second, are you dissatisfied at 4x6 print size, or are you comparing 100% crops. If you're having an issue with 100% crops, remember that your 50D is capturing twice the detail, and may simply be out resolving your lens's resolution, where your XT may have not been pushing the resolution at all.

I'm guessing you also shoot jpeg so have you played with the sharpness settings in the picture style menus?

also ... the 50D is just a little more sensitive to due to increase pixel density.

and cranking up to 200mm lens on crop camera (50D) = 320mm field of view on FF. most people shooting 300mm or more will at least mono-pod the setup.

agree w/ previous posters....

need picture posted.

Later,
_Mark

I just posted this https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=728887

My 50D was front focusing with my Sigma EX 50-150mm F/2.8 APO but focuses perfectly with my 20D and 350D..

A little AF Micro adjustment did the trick..
