I'm guessing most people will point you toward the 24-70 2.8 or the 70-200 2.8 IS as far as L lenses. If you wanna go non L for a crop body you could look at the 17-55 2.8 IS for the crop sensor. I heard its' optics are as sharp as a L but designed for your type of camera. Enjoy the forum. It's bad for your wallet. LOL

It REALLY depends on what you need.....

THe 17-55 f2.8 is going to be your best all round lens; but the Sigma 30, Canon 50 and Canon 85's are all going to do a great job too.

SO true... so so true! LOL. My wallet hates me everytime I come on here. Back to the topic. I don't shoot wedding, but I do a lot of portrait and I would recommend 24-70L / 70-200 2.8L IS / 135L.

you need wide angle for weddings, 17-55 f/2.8 IS or Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 is also a nice choice.

Op,

Sounds like your willing to spend some money so I'd go with a non L like the 17-55IS. Its a dedicated crop lens but its one to the better lenses out there for sharpness and fast AF speed.

I'd try to stay away from variable aperature lenses. On the long end of the lens you'll be at f/5.6 or f/6.3. For a wedding with challenging light you'd be in trouble if your not able to use flash.

No. Read the comments above. You need a constant aperture of 2.8 or faster as a minimum. You also need a somewhat wide angle. Since you are a self proclaimed noob i assume you are on a crop body. 28mm on a crop body is not wide enough.
Search around this site, there is a TON of good info on here. Search for Wedding FAQ.

If you plan to present yourself as the wedding photographer, NO. But you shouldn't plan to do that anyway. Other than that, it depends on a lot of things, honestly. If you are taking pictures at a beach wedding out on the beach, it might work okay. If you will be in a well lit area, it might be fine. If you use flash, it might be okay (but don't use flash and mess up the hired wedding photographer's shots). You'll need better gear if you plan to be a wedding photographer, but if you simply want to take snapshots at a friend's wedding, it will be okay. If you don't get the shots, no one loses--if you do, you've got some great personal photos to supplement the photographer's shots.

I use full frame so have more experience with lenses for those but from what I have been reading you may want to look at the Canon 35mm L 1.4, as that will be similar to 50mm on a full frame (bread and butter lens for wedding and portrait photographers). I believe Sigma also do a similar lens, think it might be a 30mm.

I also recently bought the Tamron 17-55mm f/2.8 for a holiday so have experience with using that lens on a cropped body and it is a nice fast lens. Basically equivalent to around about 28 - 90mm on a full frame.

You could then look at a Canon 50mm f/1.4 or SIgma 50mm f/1.4 (just bought this myself) which would be a nice portrait length, equivalent to around 80mm on FF.

Then you'd want something longer, not sure whether Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS would be too long on a cropped body but it's a beautiful lens. There is other makes like Sigma and Tamron but not sure how they compare.

Then you may want a wide angle starting somewhere around the 10mm area.

Rob

1200mm or 800. So you won't have to leave your house to shoot a wedding. Trust me, it's time saving.
