I am thinking of making the jump from PS Elements to Lightroom 2, does LR 2 do the raw conversion for my 50D?

I would also download this to go with the LR2:

The Camera Matching Profiles are automatically installed with LR2 and Adobe Camera RAW 4.7 and later. There's no need to do any additional downloads.

Those are included in the LR 2.4 download. (I believe from 2.1 on actually)

Thanks for the information and sorry about misinformation. I wasn't aware of that. Anyway, these profiles make a big difference and should be set as the default camera profile(s) in the LR 2.
