Since portability will be important you would like to have a HDD that is powered by USB, only downside is, is that you don't have 1TB of this (yet.)

But Western Digital (external link) has this HDD which is 500GB and USB powered.

I got the 320GB version of it and its small, compact, fast en you get a USB cable with it :).

They are all the same; just buy a trusted brand name.

considering that 2.5" portables die faster then 3.5" (shock, etc.), I would get a trusted brand, such as WD and Seagate.
I personally use WD

Personally I use my 2.5" external as a "drop box" and whenever I get to my drobo (stationary external) I dump it in, or I just save it locally, then dump it into my drobo.

Heres a 500 GB WD 2.5" HD

LaCie rugged drives have been very dependable for me... I've dropped them, muddied them and generally didn't treat them very well and all three work like champs. Better, they run off USB or firewire with no power cords to deal with.

LaCie and WD are pretty much the best externals period, fastest times and best reliability this side of corporate storage solutions. Ever since their chinese virus fiasco, I haven't trusted Maxtor, Seagate also entered into my black book with their self bricking drives (and the fact that a 320gb drive I had just decided to die on my from one second to the next, not even any funny noises, and it's not a power issue)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.
