I was down in Cornwall last week Visiting my Daughter, I spent a day at RNAS Culdrose where it was a little busier than usual as they were in preparation for their Air show this coming Wednesday ( I think an Air Show midweek is a little unusual ). Unfortunately I was unable to stay down for the show but managed to get a few reasonable shots before I left.

Does anyone know what the half drum shaped things with coloured stripes are for, the nook has them at the rear and the Sea King has them just forward of the front wheel support upper mounting ?

I believe these are infra red missile countermeasures, which is why they are mounted near the exhausts.

Those are nice shots, do you mind if I ask what camera and lens combo you used and also the shutter speed?

As I understand it, the missiles use infra red to detect the heat from the engine exhaust to home in on the aircraft.
The countermeasures confuse the missile allowing the aircraft to escape.

Hope this helps.

I had the 300 f4 prime on my 1dmkII, I had the 100-400 on my 20d and I had the 70-200 2.8 in my Rebel. I took a total of 1800 shots, not all at Culdrose; but most of them were. I can remember the Chinook, the Lynx and the Apache were taken with the 1D-300 combo but with out finding the originals and checking the exif I can't tell you the what I took the others with. Shutter speeds were all over the place, it was a windy day so dropping the shutter speeds down to 60 or 80 ish to try and get some decent rotor blur usually ended up with blurry everything as I had no tripod/monopod with me. I got some reasonable shots between gusts and some clear shots but no rotor blur when I forgot to drop the speed back down after shooting the Hawks coming over. I think I got about 30-40 keepers out of 1800 shots, which is about average for me.

Thanks, I'd have liked a little bit more on a few of them but it was a little too gusty for slow shutter speeds (I'm just making excuses now ;)).

Were you inside Culdrose shooting, or were these taken by the public viewing area by the cafe/shop?

I'd have loved to have been inside but unfortunately the security is too good and they have riffles :D I was at the café shooting through the fence; or over it if the were high enough from the ground.
