I have been trying to get a decent picture of the yellow birds in the garden for a long time. I don't think its great, but decent. I see them in the garden almost every day in the summer. I just can't get close enough for 200mm.

Nice shot! Sometimes it is hard to get close without a 400 mm telephoto, however, you did a nice job. Maybe you could set up a hiding area so they do not see you. Pretty bird, and I love the surrounding colors!!

I guess I'll add 400 2.8 to the list. Thanks for the comments.

should be able to get nice results with a 1.4x tc on there? either way, very nice shot, i like the picture as a whole rather than a bird close up.

Agree, an extender will provide you with more reach to get that closer shot. Nice photo by the way...

I'll try that. I do have the 1.4. I almost never use it because I read where people say you give up quality. I can't tell if I gave up quality or not. While I know I get more reach, I can't tell I'm getting more reach.

Thanks for the kind words.

Nice to see the surroundings too, like those flowers.

You should hardly get a drop in quality with a decent 1.4 TC especially if you stop down a bit.

Don't forget the 400mm f/5.6L or the 100-400mm zoom. Great lens's for the price. I'd try the extender first...you may be surprised at the results. I use a Canon 1.4II with my 400mm f/5.6L most of the time in good light...for perched shots that is...slows down focus too much for in-flights.

This is how we usually see him. My wife is always amazed that he can land on the tip of tree and not break off the little branch; same with the flower stalk.

Of course you are right; I don't know why I felt I needed to post it here. Forgive me.

The comment was to help you in your future efforts, not meant to be disparaging, we've all had bad shots :)

I've always had a hard time getting a decent shot on these guys. However, today my wife was in the garden cutting flowers and a male was in there with her. I told her from across the yard that I can't get close enough to take a decent picture and there you are standing right next to one. A few minutes passed and the finch was still there. I got my camera. I was able to get pretty close and it didn't seem to notice neither me nor my wife.

I think there might be something wrong with it. I took a bunch of pictures and in almost everyone of them the eyes look closed.
