I have been trying to get a decent picture of the yellow birds in the garden for a long time. I don't think its great, but decent. I see them in the garden almost every day in the summer. I just can't get close enough for 200mm.

Sometimes it is hard to get close without a 400 mm telephoto, however, you did a nice job. Maybe you could set up a hiding area so they do not see you. Pretty bird, and I love the surrounding colors!! Calindy

Agree, an extender will provide you with more reach to get that closer shot. Nice photo by the way... Jul 27, 2009 21:46 | #6 I'll try that. I do have the 1.4. I almost never use it because I read where people say you give up quality. I can't tell if I gave up quality or not. While I know I get more reach, I can't tell I'm getting more reach. Canon 40D; 50 f1.8, 70-200 f2.8 IS L, 580 EX II, 1.4 TC, 24-70 f2.8 L, (2) 430 EX II

Don't forget the 400mm f/5.6L or the 100-400mm zoom. Great lens's for the price. I'd try the extender first...you may be surprised at the results. I use a Canon 1.4II with my 400mm f/5.6L most of the time in good light...for perched shots that is...slows down focus too much for in-flights.

Jul 30, 2009 19:54 | #11 This is how we usually see him. My wife is always amazed that he can land on the tip of tree and not break off the little branch; same with the flower stalk. Canon 40D; 50 f1.8, 70-200 f2.8 IS L, 580 EX II, 1.4 TC, 24-70 f2.8 L, (2) 430 EX II

Aug 16, 2009 00:06 | #15 I've always had a hard time getting a decent shot on these guys. However, today my wife was in the garden cutting flowers and a male was in there with her. I told her from across the yard that I can't get close enough to take a decent picture and there you are standing right next to one. A few minutes passed and the finch was still there. I got my camera. I was able to get pretty close and it didn't seem to notice neither me nor my wife. Canon 40D; 50 f1.8, 70-200 f2.8 IS L, 580 EX II, 1.4 TC, 24-70 f2.8 L, (2) 430 EX II
