Trouble Scanning Photos

I am scanning some old family B&W photos with a microtek 6800 flatbed scanner.

Things go pretty well then I start to get horizontal banding or striping. It has gotten pretty bad.

I have ruled out software since I get it with viewscan or scanwizard software.

Everything is clean inside and out as far as I can tell. The bands are not always the same, not same spot or width or intensity.

Anyone have a clue what is causing this? or better yet how to fix it?

Ok well does anyone know of a good place to go in search of my scanner issue?

Could it be the paper you're trying to scan? When I scanned some old photos of my grandma, I had the same issue. Does it do it if you scan new photo paper?

Can you scan the photo upside down and see if the strips are the same?

I will try out something else like a color photo, most of what I am scanning is B&W

The streaks are always present but not always the same... If i flip the photo I get streaks around the same spot on the scanner more or less

They have moved a little. originally they were at the bottom and I could just scan images on the opposite side of the bed but now they are showing up closer to the middle...

Check out hybridphoto. It's a sister forum of APUG (a forum of analog camera users) dedicated to people scanning in film for digital post processing. As one may expect, they have an entire subforum called Scanning and Scanners. Chances are you will find experts who can help you solve your problem. Just typing in the word "banding" yielded 9 threads in their search function.

PS: From looking at your image I'd suspect you scanner has a defect. Check out what happens if you scan in a grey sheet of paper. If the problem persists, get a new scanner.
