I have been saving up for a "good" lens for my 50D and so far I have $800 ready to go.

What is out there that will give me the best for my dollar?

*This lens will be on the camera most of the time.
*I am looking for a zoom.
*At this point I think a f4 will do me just fine, 95% during the day, nice daylight shooting.
*IS is up in the air at this point, it matters how much zoom there is.
*I would like to go new, not used.
*If possible, I would love for it to be my 1st Canon "L", but I know I for sure will be giving up zoom and or IS. If I have to give up on the "L" then so be it, White Dot would be ok or from another manufacture.
*Should I just wait, keep saving? I think I would really like the EF 24-105 f4 L

Thanks

By the third point I was thinking 24-105L, just a little long maybe, and then I saw you have a 28-135. That seals it. Go with it, especially if you can get a good one at $800. You won't regret it. Personally, I loved it on an APS-C body.

Kind regards, Wim

How about sell the 28-135 (= more money) and get a Tamron 17-50/2.8 and an EF 70-200/4, both used?

Do you ever find that your 28-135 is not wide enough on your crop body. If not, then you will love the 24-105L. I don't believe that this lens is wide enough however if you are shooting indoors often. If you want a great zoom for your crop body, you can't go wrong with a 17-55 2.8 IS.

save up $200 more and get the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM. Or if you hurry, get in on the Canon rebate and add a MS Bing Ebay cashback and final price will be close to $900.

You failed to say what you are going to shoot and that would make it easier to make recommendations. But the 24-105 F/4L is one incredible lens. Very, very sharp. It vignettes horribly at 24mm wide open. But you are never going to see this on an amateur cropped sensor camera.

But you will not get one new for $800. So either keep saving, buy used (what I did), or sell your 28-135. I would suggest the latter. You are only giving up 20 mm on the long end and to have the two is a duplication of the rest of the zoom range.

Or you can buy that 17-55 in the classified section right now for just over $800. Looks minty and w/hood.

I would definitely sell that 28-135 and get a 24-105L. Or keep it and get a 70-200 f/4IS depending on how much you really like the lens.

Thanks everyone, yes I will sell off the 28-135, there would be no need for it if going with the range of the 24-105.

Again i know 800 wont get me the 24-105 new, that is why I said "Should I just wait, keep saving? I think I would really like the EF 24-105 f4 L".

Again I think I want to go new and not used. The used price IMO is just to close to new, I don't think buying used is worth saving about 10%. "Unless", I find a deal that someone for what ever reason just doesn't want the lens and it hasn't been used for months +. I know used can be a good thing, but getting near a Grand in cost, new is still better in my mind.

The 28 so far as been fine for me, again most all my pic taking is outside, I have had no problem walking a few steps forward or back for more in the side to side of the photo.

Going with 2 lenses instead of 1 would be ok, just was thinking of that "L" with a good range so it can stay on the camera most of the time, less lens change, less possible dust.

Then save the extra coin and get the 24-105L, if that's what you really want, then it shouldn't be a problem.

That also would put a EF-S 17-55 in your hands if you so chose.

Ah, decisions, decisions...

snip.......

....snip

But doesn't it mean the difference between getting it now and taking advantageof all this lens will offer you and not?

And isn't the difference at least 20%?

I think this llens is going for around $1000 - 1100 new. I bought mine for $800. In fact, everything in my sig was bought used. If you purchase someplace like FM foums where you are dealing with another photog and one with a lot of feedback I think you can very comfortably buy used.

matonanjin... I see your point, but unless I mistaken, please look on the forums now for the EF 24-105 f4 L. What I have seen is "because of Canon price change" people are asking way to close to new IMO, $900-950+. New can be found for $1000.00.

***To everyone else before or later to post here***

Again yes I know that is around $100 more when buying new, but really doesn't it make sense to pay a extra 100-150 for something that is new in the box, "with" a warranty that you know for sure can be used?

Don't forget we are talking $1000 here, not $50 for a new lens... Myself, I happy to spend (some could say waste) $100 or so for new over used on a $1000 ticket...

Last... Just because Canon jacked up the price, I'll be damned if I am going to give someone what they paid for that lens or more when they bought it new. They had a good amount of time owning/using that lens, they can make their "sell to profit used lens" on someone else (go ahead kick my butt for that comment, that's fine, but the truth is the truth the for sale section shows it).

My choice is new and if I have to hold off for another week or 2 that's fine, at least I know I will have a new lens, with warranty and it only cost me about $100 more then buying used.

Ok... With all that said, still not sure where I am headed. Please keep the thoughts coming.
