Just wondering... I'm getting mine today (hopefully) but was wondering what people shoot? I'll be mostly shooting people (weddings) and was wondering if I know what pictures are not gonna be enlarged, are there any disadvantages to shooting in sRAW?? or should I just shoot in full RAW?

How many RAW pics can I fit on a 8gb card?

Thanks! :)

the only disadvantage to sRAW is they can't be opened by all programs. Basically, aperture and iPhoto both balk at them. Then the enlarging issue, but 10mp is still plenty.

as for how many RAWs, the typical filesize is ~22mb for a RAW but once the ISO goes up so does the filesize. sRAW2 3200 files can be in their 20s and full RAW 3200 shots are ~30mb...

I personally shoot my family photos for my blog as sRAW2 (5mp). it's more than enough for what we do with those images. Then my sell able items are either large JPEGs or RAWs just to be safe.

I am currently shooting a combination of raw and sraw. 10 mp is plenty big for just about anything, but I'm torn. Is there REALLY no difference in quality between the two other than actual size of image? I shot some the other day in sraw and noticed that my shadow areas were blown out much more than usual. I suspect it was user error and I wasn't paying enough attention, but found it a little distracting anyway. I sure like the smaller file size as the full raw tends to really slow down Lightroom for me (still fast, but not as fast as it is on the 40D images I'm used to dealing with).

Funny, my system likes the RAW files better than the sRAW files, makes no sense to me but RAW opens faster and zoom view (pixel peeping) comes in faster too....

It's funny, when S-Raw was first implemented in the 10MP 1D MkIII, most of us scoffed at the idea,. (and with pretty reasonable argument IMHO )

....but when you combine it with a 22MP sensor and an S-Raw @ 10MP... suddenly the idea of S-RAW starts to make a lot of sense!

I haven't used S-RAW yet - but as CDS says, it might well make sense. I shot a tractor pull last weekend, and ate up 4-gig CF cards like they were candy. Had I shot S-RAW instead of RAW, I would have had considerably more room. And, considering that none of these will likely be used to make large prints, I think that 10 mpx images would have been fine.

Oh, I get about 130 shots on a 4-gig CF card. My 8-gig card is on a UPS truck somewhere between here and 349 West 34th street in New York even as we speak!

...are there any disadvantages to shooting in sRAW?

Yes:

  • It increases aliasing artifacts such as moirĂ©.
  • It reduces the effectiveness of lots of post processing tasks (chromatic aberration correction, rotation, distortion correction, etc.)
  • It precludes the use of higher resolution in ways you did not or could not predict were necessary at the time it was taken.
  • There are a lot of superior alternatives to sRAW, unfortunately Canon has not implemented any of them yet.
I created another thread to go into it in more detail: Canon sRAW considered harmful

I shoot full RAW only, for one reason - flexibility for cropping. With all of the data intact and a good sharp lens, you have amazing flexibility to create even multiple high res "sub" images from one original master. I agree that 10MP is plenty for printing - even 24x36" posters are fantastic with photos from my 40D. But editing options open up tremendously with the full 21mp intact.

I shoot mostly SRAW (10 MP) but if I need more reach than my lens will give me then I shoot RAW then crop. Family get together and the WB is simple then I shoot large JPEG.

I use the 5MP sraw mode a lot. 21mp is overkill.

What I want to use the sRAW for is ceremony/church shots. The lighting is not the best there usually so ISO will be high, but most dont what those pictures enlarged, so those can be shot at sRAW, the way I look at it!
