I had some time on my hands this weekend and decided to take a short road trip to Santa Cruz for some surfing photography. The radio had said that there was a chance of large surf over the weekend.

Went to the same spot as before (Steamer's Lane) with a 70-200 and 300 lens. I wanted to get the arc of spray from a surfer's hard turn at the top of a wave. Here are a few that I liked:

This was the average sized wave:

the larger waves usually resulted in this:

Rick, I was carrying a 400 2.8, when were you there? I got that sunburst board too and the Blond kid, and the older guy with the grey hair!! We had to be there on Sat at the same time. Were you using a 300 f4 and wearing a hat?

IMO ... Your best is this one....

and you seem to have the same issue as myself ... a little on the fuzzy side. Some of the freaks on here know secrets to perfect focusing and I want in on the club!

Les, yes that was me. I think more people know me when I am wearing a hat than when not. Shooting there was quite interesting. I found it interesting that nobody really rode the big sets that came through, everybody just paddled out (not a criticism, just an observation; as I was not in the water, just taking photos).

Hope you enjoyed the day as much as I did.

Regards
Rick

Nice ones Rick! Are you shooting the Fall CCCX series? If you are, see you there! The hat is a giveaway as well!

The larger waves were "Mushy" or poor quality and broke over too soon. Next time maybe we can shoot togeather!

Big sets at the lane break too wide ( too far from the reef edge) on south swell. It is a lot of paddling energy for a fat channel bomb.

Nice shots,
lets see some lineup shots! (pulled back)
