The 28mm costs more but not by that much..should I just do a straight trade?

I really like the canon 28mm 1.8...it gives me very sharp pictures but I feel that the 85mm 1.8 will be even better for my future plans for portraiture.

What do you guys think?

Why do you feel your 50mm 1.4 is not a good portrait lens? If it is too short, then I would trade that instead. Personally, I think have a normal prime (2.8mm 1.8) and a longer prime (50 OR 85) would be a better and more versatile setup than having 2 longer primes.

That said, if you use the 50 a lot more than the 28, then don't keep a lens you aren't using. But 28mm is lot more useful as an indoor prime than 50 or 85 in my opinion.
