My skin allergies are worse as I age. Tape is out - I react to it.
I have no problems with Nitrile - I hope that Canon responds to my repeated emails.

how about visiting your local camera dealer and handling samples of the lenses you're interested, see if you get a reaction? another suggestion is if you're unsure about cutting the rubber off yourself, call your closest canon service center, the actual repair shop (don't ask the guys at the general canon products hotline, they're just phone operators with no in-depth info) explain you have allergies and ask if they are willing to remove the rubber ring for you

I told you what works. Pull off the original rings and replace them with silicon charity wristbands.

Just don't use the hot pink ones :p

Seriously though, I think they have ones in every color these days. Try and find some black ones. But if you ever care about resale value, I'd go with my suggestion and coat it.

For resale, you can just put the stock rings back on. That's what I did with my Tamron 28-75.

I found reference here:

that Nikon's D90's body grips contain latex, although the discussion also says the D40 does not.

Are you sure it's the lenses, and not the body grip?

Thanks for the info about Nikons.

I am sure that it is not the body grip on my Canon XS, since the dermatitis is only on my left hand - pinky alone. If it were the body grip, then it would be on my right hand.

I suspect that Canon is slow in figuring this out. I am either going to have to cover the grip material, or not use the kit lens. I'd hate to not use it - it is light, sharp enough, and convenient. If I have to, I'll cover it.

I'd like to know for sure about Tamron and Canon lenses - I really want to get more lenses.

There are no shops close by that will carry any lenses I am interested in. All the camera stores in town went out of business, and the only retailers are places like Best Buy.

You would think that someone at Canon, Nikon, etc would have considered eliminating latex from any camera body/lens part that's exposed to the outside. Keep sending in your complaints to Canon. Although that may act on it the same time that replace the "print" button.

We have the same problem with latex containing gloves in our lab. Some people are very sensitive to latex and, also, to the powder used to make the inside of gloves slippery. So we now only use powder-less nitrile gloves.

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

Canon T4i (2 lenses), Fuji X100s, Olympus OM-D EM-1 (3 lenses)

I found a message on my home phone from Canon customer relations - they say that there is no latex in their lenses. I haven't been able to reach the person, but will give you an update when I can.

Interesting. After digging a bit more, it seems Nikon claims the same thing: no latex in any of their lenses.

Wonder then, why it's causing you a reaction?
