I've only had my 50D for aobut 3 months and have put on about 2600 shots. Two days ago I started getting error 99, which I had never had before on this camera or on my previous XT. I was using my siggy 105 and did all the things - turn off and on, took the battery out, switched from my 3rd party back to my canon, etc. It happened about 5 times - take a few shots, error, take a few more - error.

So today I updated the firmware from 1.0.3 to the new 1.0.7. I'm also using a canon lens today - my 70-300 DO. And now I'm getting ERROR 30! WTH is that? The only things I can find on it refer tothe 5D, NOT the 50D. What is error 30, and what should I do??

It's shutter related if you go to the firmware update page here (external link)
and scroll through the cumulative updates in 'firmware Q&A' you will find a list of the error codes.....

I don't know how accurate the information below is... I downloaded it from the net a while back and saved it.. (I can't quite remember where I got it from :) )

(EDIT The link freddobar posted while I was typing this reply confirms the codes are valid.. As he indicates, the problem deals with the shutter)
---------------

Err 20 A mechanical malfunction has been detected.
Err 30 A shutter malfunction has been detected.
Err 40 A power malfunction has been detected.
Err 50 An electric control malfunction has been detected.
Err 70 An image related malfunction has been detected.
Err 80 An image or electric control malfunction has been detected.

I just went through this with Canon on my 40D.

According to Canon, the Err99 is like the catch all sort of error - like "check engine" light.

That said, mine did have a shutter problem at 10K clicks that cost $201 to fix.

I think the whole x0D line has had a lot of shutter issues over time.

Dang hate to here that as that is about how many clicks I have on my 50D. I would call Canon first thing Monday morning and see what they have to say.

Well crap. I'm guessing the Error99 before the firmware update is the same problem that is now showing up as Error30. It happens when I try to take several shots quickly, so it's the shutter. I've emailed Canon Canada and will see what they say. In any case it's under warranty, but I just hate that I'll probably have to send it in...

Yes I read that thread when I got the errors (google is my friend.) However, I wasn't shooting vertically. I was shooting birds out the front window and had the camera on one shot, not al servo. But I was clicking rather fast, and that is when it started happening. I was clicking rather fast 2 days ago wehn I got the error 99. So I think the shutter couldn't keep up with what I was trying to do.

When I say "fast" I don't mean rapid fire - I mean depressing the shutter about every second or 2...

Why not use 6 FPS mode along AI servo?

Set drive to high speed (there are three settings - single, burst and high speed burst).

All that doesn't matter. You didn't hurt your camera from what you describe, it's probably the normal canon shutter problem. Most of them are just fine but a finite number of them are unreliable and die an early death (infant mortality syndrome).

Well if you keep pressing the button and the camera is in the middle of taking a shot...it will fail...is like going forward in an automatic car and suddenly **** to reverse...repeat as necessary...or stick ****ft cars.

Page 89 of the manual. I would also suggest just using center point when tracking FAST moving sujects, since it has "extra' assist point with lenses f/2.8 and faster. This on page 86 of the manual.
