I have been considering a new OC flash, and doing some research, I notice that the Metz 58 AF-1 goes to 1/125 sec at full power.

My question is , does anyone have problems with the Metz 58 doing flash in full sun? To try to be more specific, if I place the subject facing away from the sun, ISO 100, 1/250 sec at about f8-10 (adjust flash for distance) with current flash, will usually give me a decent exposure at about 8-9ft. The sun will provide edge lighting of about +1.

Am I going to have problems with Metz 58, if I buy it? I don't want to try to do this with 1/125 sec. I have no experience with HSS, maybe that will be the difference.
Thanks for any input.

You'll need to stop down the aperture another stop to properly expose the ambient when you slow down the shutter from 1/250 to 1/125. This will reduce your flash distance by a factor of 1.4.

High speed sync is sometimes an option but it will give you less range.

Metz makes high quality flash units, but this is the main reason I didn't buy one.

Thanks for the reply, Curtis. Yes, I understand about the reduction of shutter spd and stopping down, but I was hoping someone would respond that, with the increased GN, most portrait type shots could be done at 1/250 sec. Most times is really not good enough, I guess.

As I think more about it, however, I tend to think like you. I don’t believe I can live with not being able to control the background exp better.

I wanted to post again to let Curtis know that I found that the, now discontinued, Metz 54 mz-4 has a 1/200 sec duration at the low end, and that is good enough for me. I ordered a used one.

I like the idea that the Metz works well in auto mode. I have had the Metz 60 CT for so long and it has functioned flawlesly, that I am a bit influenced by that. I guess I have faith in Metz. I also note that Wilt likes Metz too.
Thanks, Don

I like Metz. Over a decade of reliable usage and accuracy of exposures (with TTL flash control or in Auto photosensor mode) Works with every brand/model of camera I own.

Metz 54MZ pro: flash duration at max power = 1/200; any camera/model compatible with it
Metz 54MZ con: not Canon wireless compatible

Metz 58AF pro: Canon wireless compatible
Metz 58AF con: max output not captured at 1/200 shutter; Canon only
