Im looking at buying a new lens.

I am either going to get the Sigma 70-300 DG or the Sigma APO DG.

I am aware that the APO is better in some way, but was wondering how much the difference is between the 2.

I do have a budget which is more towards the DG, but i will and wait a while longer if its worth saving the extra £100 if the APO is significantly better?

Thanks For the advice in advice.

Where is it £100 extra?

http://www.warehouseexpress.com …g-lens-canon-fit/p1008569 (external link) £178 here and

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk …rsQ5fJNQQsalenotsupported (external link) £155 on eBay.

The APO is considerably better than the non-APO by all accounts.

Sigma APO are not really APO, so don't get too excited about names. Make sure your lens is either EX or EX DG, or it will not work on your camera.

Why not go on ebay and buy yourself a canon 100-300, around £120. , or a 75-300 canon, much better than a sigma in speed of focus. Shop around you can get some right bargains.

Sigma's 70-300mm is one of those that has an early version that does not work on DSLR's and cannot be rechipped. You can see them for sale on KEH tagged as 'film only'.

Thats the problem with being an eager Noob. I was looking for them but they were over £300, brand new, then i came to realise after i made a bid which i am now winning, that the canon i was looking at has got IS. I have now, just found this out and know why it is more expensive . I didn't know i could get a canon 70-300mm without IS, which is significantly cheaper and in my budget.

Heres hoping i get out bidded
Thanks

I have been looking into what that chap said about it not fitting. I can't find an EX version either when i search to see if it will fit, all the place ive been to says it will.

Im confident that it will, but being a Noob an all. Can anyone clarify that if it will fit, I'll be gutted if it doesnt.

Sigma's 70-300mm APO lens is significantly better optically than the non-APO version. It will work fine with your dSLR. I owned one for years and used it with both my EOS-1 and my XTI. I was always impressed with the sharpness and contrast. It has a noisy, slow auto-focus motor, but it makes up for this with a nice macro feature which gives a 1:2 reproduction ratio. If action photography is your thing, than this is not your lens. The Canon 70-200mm L lenses would be better. But for macro and general still photography, it's hard to beat this lens for the price. Look on Amazon.com. They're currently on sale for $192.00 US with free shipping. APO, by the way, stands for apochromatic. It means that a Special Low Dispersion (SLD) element is incorporated in the lens to correct for chromatic distortion. As gasrocks stated, it isn't a true APO lens, as some chromatic distortion remains, but it is much better than the non-APO version or Canon's cheap non-IS version, IMHO. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again.

Cheers man,

I want it for a few things really. wildlife, sport and macro.

If i have just been looking at the 70 200 L lense your talking about, I think i'll be waiting a few years or until i become a pro haha before i would even consider buying something at that price

Here's a shot I took with my Sigma 70-300mm APO lens at a flower festival in Asheville, NC. No post processing applied. I just adjusted the exposure and sharpness a tad. This is a good example of what this lens can do. I sold it (plus my soul, but no great loss there) in order to buy my Canon 70-200mm f/4 L, but I was never unhappy with its optical performance. :)
