I want to scan my wedding photo negatives but they are a lot bigger than 'normal' film. Unfortunately, I also lost contact with the photographer (not answering emails).
I believe she used a Hasselblad camera (this was the days before i was interested in photography or i would have asked what model, etc).
Are all Hasselblad negatives the same size? And if so what is it so i can find a suitable company to scan them.

Tarponut, welcome to the board. I want to congratulate you on your first post. Actual information. Well done. Almost all first posts are some question that has been asked a million times, like, "I saw this really cool effect where the whole picture was black and white and the rose (ring, eyes, teardrop, car, whatever) was in color. How do I do that cuz i think it looks kewel"

So a first post that contributes is quite refreshing. Well done.

Rad

I don't believe that is correct. I'm pretty sure that Hasselblad makes backs in 2 image sizes... 6x6 and 6x4.5 . This may make a differance, but, doubtful. Most any reputable shop that can deal with any of the medium format sizes should be fine. Nowdays, most all of these images will be digitized first and depending on the quality could dictate the price. Pros will care more that there isn't dust and the color is correct compared to a place like Ritz, Wolf, etc. And, probably not needed, drum scans can get VERY pricey.

This can also be done at home if you aren't looking to blow up to poster size. I use a Epson Perfection V500 with great results for home processing and a flatbed. And it can be had for less than $200. Heres an example just to show tonal range (scanned from 6x7 Velvia 50)

Why not just measure them?

Hahaha... Would be too easy ;)

On a side note: Pretty easy to see what camera was used: A hasselblad has two v shaped notches in the film back: Link (external link)

Shouldn't really need to measure them. If it is square, then its the 6x6. If its rectangle, then its 6x4.5 . Either way, any decent processing place you would take it to that will scan a 6x4.5 will also do the 6x6 and 6x7 vice-versa. Simply need to ask about pricing and what resolutions they scan medium format film at. And you might want to check if they clean for waterspots or dust as well prior to scanning.

I stand corrected. Apparently they provided a dual format from around 1998.

When I was a wedding photographer (1977 thru 1989) it was 6x6 (2 1/4") square. In those days you almost constantly had your camera on a tripod, and viewed the screen via the look-down loupe. This help with the composition, and to turn the camera on it's side was not viable. We would mark the viewfinder screen with a black marker, to a 6 x 4.5 format which helped with cropping.

Probably more information than you needed.

As Jetboy points out, scanners are relatively inexpensive, and most include a variety of film holders, and do a pretty good job.

Paul.

2 1/4 square is a figurative measurement! 645 is a figurative measurement!

The long dimension on 645 is not 6.0cm but is really about 55mm; same for 6x6 format. Hasselblad 6x6 frame is really 54mm x 54mm
The short dimension of 645 varies by manufacturer, as Bronica and Mamiya and Pentax all have different short dimension.
