Hi everyone,
I'm in the long process of processing all the photos I took from a two week vacation in Yellowstone in July. These are just some of the wildlife photos I've managed to get through so far. I'll be posting more, including a series of Wolves hunting Elk (from very far away, not the best photos per say but still cool IMO). More photos can be found here: http://www.pbase.com/palmor/yellowstone_wildlife (external link)

Comments welcome!

All shot with a 40d and 400 f/5.6 L. I had just picked up this lens a week or so before I left so it was a bit of a learning curve while on the trip.

I felt really bad about this photo. There was a mother duck quacking her brains out as this Coyote was searching for food in the tall grass. What I didn't know was that he actually found a baby duck to snack on (look closely at what is in his mouth). At 100% view the baby duck seems to be looking right at me.

Wow that cotoye/duck one is harsh. And it is looking right at the camera. I'm sure it made a nice snack for the coyote. Not a good spot for the ducklings if a coyote can reach.

Man that's ugly, but that is nature. It's not all cuddly and pretty. It can be pretty damn awful.

What an awesome capture - both for you and for the coyote!!!

Great series, and don't feel too bad about the duckling. If it weren't for the predators, we'd be up to our eyeballs in prey!

They are all quite nice but I LOVE the one of the grizzly on the hill. Very eye catching. Well done palmor!

Very nice. You seem to have mastered your new lens quickly. Where did you spot the grizzly?

These are all great shots (especially the two headed bison), but I am really drawn to the first one, nice angle!

Those are some fantastic shots. The two with the coyotes are especially good. You don't just get shots with the duck in it's mouth looking at you every day! Love the shot of the griz on the slopes of Dunraven too.

Nice pics. I just got back from YS yesterday, but I didn't get such good shots as you. I have a couple questions for you:

Were you hiking through trails to get some of these shots or were they from the side of the road?

Also, with a 400mm, it looks like you still had to get pretty close to in some of these shots. Did you get pretty close? Some of those bear shots seem too close for comfort for me. How were you able to do it? Did you have to camp out in the woods?

Nice work! I can't believe it's been 9 years since I was in Yellowstone. I need to fix that.
