I've spent countless hours in a blind trying to photograph Ringneck Pheasants, and they're always extremely skittish. Then this weekend there was this rooster (male) pheasant that had his hen and 5 chicks along. Unusual for the male to be a part of their lives at this time of year. Even more unusual was the fact that he approached to within excellent "shooting" range.

The attached image is uncropped, except for a bit taken off the top. 5D "classic" with a 400 2.8. The 2x tele-extender was attached, giving me an effective focal length of 800mm.

Gary, I took this at the entrance to the Dungeness Spit National WIldlife Refuge on the Olympic Peninsula in western Washington. When I went to a seashore wildlife refuge, I was thinking seals, terns, perhaps a starfish or some crabs . . . The last thing on my mind was pheasants! Sometimes the unexpected subjects turn out being the best.

Great shot Tom. I'm jealous!
I never would have guessed that you found this bird at Dungeness Spit. It does seem odd that he is in full courtship display at this time of year - and with the hen and chicks as well.

You're right, Bob - it was very unusual. I didn't think roosters were ever involved in "family life".

Here's a shot of him with his lady and one of the chicks (the other chicks had already gotten back into the weeds).

Very nice. The pattern and depth of the feathers on the breast are awesome. Almost 3D like. Well done! They are way cool birds.

Very nice shot Tom. That bird has more white on his back then normal as well. I like it a lot. I have been around pheasants for a while and did not know the roosters were ever involved with family life either. I enjoy your work. Keep it up. Rick

I wish I could see these. Does anyone know why I wouldn't be able to view the pictures. I can look at others, but some don't show up.

Hmmmm. Perhaps you can't see "attached" photos, but you can see "embedded" photos. I can only attach photos to my posts - the whole "embedded" doesn't work for me.

I wish you could see it, too. Tell you what - just go to my website - here's a link to the Gamebird gallery. The pheasant image posted here is the first one. Hope that helps!
