I have all my new images and now I want to put them on DVD's. basically I have two sets of files. My RAW files, and others which I have worked on and are now finished.
I have one other issue. The PC I do all my editing on hasn't got Roxio, so I have to put the files I want to keep on USB Flash drives and then put them on the PC with Roxio and my DVD burner. Trouble is I can't seem to figure out a good way to put the RAW files on my flashdrive. If I just choose a bunch and then try and copy and paste, it copies fine ,but when I try and paste the files into my flash drive I don't get a paste option.
So what would be the best way to do this?

Are you saying this only happens with Raw files? If you copy a jpeg, does Paste show up with the thumb dirve, or are you saying that you can't copy anything and then paste it into the thumb drive?

What method are you using to perform the Copy and the Paste?

Windows can write DVDs directly, you don't need additional software. Just put the DVD in, copy and paste onto the DVD, then right click and choose "write files to DVD". Well it works with CD, I figure it'll work with a DVD too.

Tried again last night and it takes forever.Especially transferring to a thumb drive.I'm finding it better to transfer a copied Tiff file. Trying to save RAW files just doesn't seem to work at all for me.
I'm wondering how people do it at all, it just takes forever.

raw files are No different than any other data file, be it jpgs, Word documents, PDFs, C++ source code files....

I just burned 16GBs of raw files to FIVE DVDs last night, each dvd took about six minutes, I played guitar while waiting for each one to finish. I use Nero Express and make a "Data DVD" and just add the cr2s to the burn project.

Instead of copy and paste on your flash drive, just do a drag and drop, works the same way. To move to the other computer just do the same from the flash drive to a folder on the computer, then do a data DVD, and good to go.

Sounds like the easiest way to go might be to set up a small LAN between the two computers, and move them that way. I think you would find this easier and faster. Providing both computers have a card in the you would only need one piece of CAT 5 cable, or could go wireless (but not as secure), and XP or Vista is real simple to set this up between the two. For more then the two you would need additional hardware, and a little more complicated, but not much.

Are you backing up to an external hard drive (if not, you should)? If you are, why not just plug the backup drive in to your Roxio pc and do it that way.

I use drag and drop in My Computer (make sure you have the left hand pane showing the folder list) to move RAW files to external USB devices. Or you could use something like Fast STone Image Viewer but it is a bit slower.

You would save time if you use an external hard drive and set it up to copy the files when you first put them on the PC or to have it done while you sleep. I do this onto 2 external drives ,in case of failure. It would take too much time and DVD's to copy to them.

A file's a file, whether it's raw tiff or doc it makes no difference. If it's slower for some file types something's very wrong. If you have RAW thumbnails turned on in windows explorer that could be it, USB 2 can only transfer data in a single direction at time. Drag and drop as suggested would get around that problem.

Assuming you're using windows, open explorer, open the folder containing the raw files. Be sure the Task bar is displayed rather than the folder tree. Select the files you want transferred, then in the task bar select "copy the selected items", then select your thumb in the drop down window. It's that simple. no dragging, dropping, cutting, pasting, etc. The next time you do it the thumb drive is already selected. Even easier.
