...except for the fact that you go from f/2.8 on the 17-55, to the f/4 on the 24-105

that's why god invented the 24-70L f2.8.

or stick with the 24-105L. you get 1.3 narrower stops of DOF on FF (f4.0 on FF = f2.5 on crop), and the iso can be boosted as well to get the faster shutter.

all in all basically the same.

My point...17-55mm f/2.8 IS

vs. 24-105 f/4 IS or 24-70 f/2.8 no IS

Since many of us are recommending the 24-105 lens as one possibility for you, be aware that the 5D Mark II is sold as a kit that includes the 24-105 f/4 IS lens. Purchasing the kit saves you about $350 over purchasing the body and lens separately.

Good point.

Also, don't forget these L's retain their value really well so you could consider going 24-105 for a few months and if you find yourself yearning for that extra stop (and don't need IS and reach) well then you could trade for the 24-70 here or ebay for a relatively small increment.

That was my plan but I'm still loving the 24-105 too much so still no brick in my bag!
