My 5DmkII shows up today and I need to get a compact, lightweight yet sturdy tripod for a trip to Europe soon. Any recommendations? Thanks!

what is your budget? If you can, gitzo. If you want to spend half that, I bought a 190cxpro4 and it worked well for me on the back of my backpack hiking in the rockies :) Definately easier on my back than my 055 :D

You bought a 5dII. Get a gitzo 1541T. You may be interested in this thread https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=538298

If you want to spend the money, the Gitzo 1541t. You can save a bit with the Benro Angel or the above noted Feisol. In addition to the thread above started by ben_r, there are others on the other two tripods. You can do a search.

I chose the reliability, track record and lifetime warranty of the Gitzo.

Without telling us what you shoot, and what you shoot with-- it's hard to give good advice.

Gitzo, as tvphotog wrote, has a LOOOONG track record of delivering great products. That doesn't mean they are free from defects, or don't break... but nothing is perfect.

Feisol has some interesting "in the middle" models, particularly the 3441s.

And Benro's Travel Angel (which I have and adore) really seems to nail the ultra-light, ultra-compact category; nothing else really matches its specs in those areas. Though, as a counter-part to Gitzo, Benro doesn't have the track record, and in some cases has made what some consider subpar products (see the infamous ballhead breakdown).

I wouldn't suggest my 0-series for shooting in heavy wind or with long lenses (200 or longer with any regularity... though it would work in a pinch). But for my uses, it's perfect and tiny.
