Ok cool, thanks for your help! I'll make sure it's all backed up and i'll restore it. I guess i'll just restore it then install iTunes then point it to that library somehow in the preferences.

btw I make an image file from a drive, I don't copy drive to drive. That way I can write the image back to a drive easily later.

For just apps and the 3.0 software you are definatley fine. If iTunes is signed into the same account that is on the iPod it will definatley pull off a copy of the apps and maintain them on the computer. The 3.0 software on the iPod, I tunes will read what is on the ipod but will not revert it.

Actually I will let you know about the 3.0. Now that I think about it I have not synced on my laptop since I updated it. But I am more than sure Itunes will do nothing but read the file that says what version is on the Ipod.

I can tell you iTunes does nothing about a jailbroke Ipod. I jailbroke mine about a month ago and sync to my desktop everyday. As far as Itunes is concerned there is nothing different.

I haven't jailbroken, I haven't found a need yet.

I did it more for fun than anything. And most apps available on Cydia are not worth the time. Some of the theams are cool though. Ill try to post screen shots of the theams.

However I do want GPS on my iPod and the only way to get it is by jailbreaking it. wifi GPS does not work to well in the car.

Think of the Library file like the LR Library. It's just a small database file that keeps track of all your music, pod casts, movies, apps and so on. Like I said, you can let iTunes manage your music if you want it all in the same place and move the folder wherever you want. Then hold Shift while iTunes opens and select the Library regardless of its location. I have mine on a drive to itself and my professional (clips, sound fx, etc...) on another drive. Just remember the three rules; backup, backup backup :)

Not quite the same though, you can use any LR library in the newest LR2, but often times iTunes decides it won't open an old library if you reinstall it. Happened when migrating from a laptop to my desktop, and followed the instructions you repeated too. And it was only an upgrade from a high version 7 to low version 8.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

I wonder if I can change that big "earth" picture on my lock screen.

Since i'm staying inside the same iTunes version hopefully the library will migrate properly.

It was just an example. Typically, you should not try to use a database from a version not of the same iteration. Migration is typically supported by most programs, but usually through direct upgrades (via software upgrade) and not simply a database move. Even in database moves you have to upgrade the software from a point where a database move has been made ready. That said, some companies will purposely 'not' change their format so people won't have to jump through hoops to move data.

Edit - I had trouble restoring, because I restored the wrong folder. If anyone tries in future read this (external link)! :)

Once jailbroke, you can change just about everything.

My current Lock screen and desktop.....Several things to notice...

-Top left corner. It has my last name rather than "iPod"
-Top right corner. I have a percent to the battery as well like the 3GS
-Names under the icons removed.
-The framing around the Dock at the bottom is now inviable for a cleaner look.
-And I now have a desktop image. Useless to people that dont know the image as it is really covered. But I know the image and it is fine.
-The Lincoln replaced the lock slider. Drive it to the right and it unlocks.

Glad to hear it Tim. The only reason I've thought about hacking my iPhone is to get tethering.

In an unrelated story (speaking about my iPhone) I'm still getting checks from Sprint, which I had for 10+ years. I called to ask them why I just got my last $8.56 check - I quit them more than two years ago. The operator put me on hold and five minutes came back and told me that Sprint sent out checks from time to time to old customers due to loosing class action law suites and was crediting me. Lol... To date I've gotten over $35.00 back :)

That's weird about the silly little payments.

btw are there any guides to using an iPod with iTunes? I've never seen a manual, and the link to a manual from Safari on the iPod doesn't work. I want to know how to do little things, like have my podcasts actually turn up on my iPod. I could probably figure it out in a minute or two, but there's probably other things I don't know too.

I got this book (external link) for my daughter when I got her her iPod Touch. I've skimmed it and it looks like it's pretty complete. In the end there are two ways to update your iPod; manually or automatically. When you attach the iPod and see the Summery screen you can choose each tab to select what is updated and how. You can also select whether you want the iPod to act as external storage (this give the iPod the ability to be used on other computers as long as the media is not have a DRM). There are many ways that an iPod can be setup for different user needs.
