I would appreciate any recommendation on fairly inexpensive light stands. I'm mainly looking for ones with arms sticking out (horizontal or adjustable) that can hold a medium softbox and lights.

yes, that's it. I found some on B&H but most only hold 1~2 lbs. The ones that holds 3~5lb costs half a grand, which is too much for me. Any good suggestions?

are you looking at stands with a built in boom, or just a boom to add to an existing stand? lots of shooters in the alien bee thread use booms for their bees and I cant imagine they are spending that kind of cash.

It depends on how much the softbox and strobe weights. The heavier the load the more you will pay for an appropriate light stand and boom arm. It's generally a good idea to get something that can hold a little more than what you need, just to be on the safe side. Don't forget the sand bags.

How much are you trying to hold? How high up? How far does the boom need to extend? The more info you give on what you actually want, the better. Gotta give information if you want to receive.

The Avenger 4050cs is a remarkably strong boom stand that can hold a heck of a lot, and costs about $300....only downside is it's big and heavy.

AlienBees 13' heavy duty stand and boom arm attachment:

This combo holds an AB and a 30"x60" softbox in just about any position I want...no problem. And as Matthew said, "don't forget the sandbags" ( or other way to weight the base )
