Got about $900 burning in the pocket and can't decide which way to go.

I shoot freestyle outdoors mainly, but want to eventually move into an indoor studio where the bees would shine.

Which way should I go???

I couldnt make up my mind, so I do both and each has its merits. Let me make a couple of observations, then a useful hint.
Strobist route. easily Portable, cheap power source, can be a lot cheaper depending on your trigger method and the speedlights used. Can also be damned expensive if you want to retain ettl and the bells and whistles that come with it.

Bees method. Lots more power, lots more options in light modifiers, heavy, expensive power supply, a bit slower to setup when used outside, but unmatched by speedlights indoors...

Now, my suggestion. Go both. Several of the parts are interchangeable. You need stands, umbrellas, a light meter for both. Pick up a couple of cheap flashes and have them available to pack in a strobist kit. Then have the bees for jobs that require it.
If you shop used, cruise craigslist you can get old 285s or 283's cheap enough . Go ahead and start with the bees but keep your eye open for the bargains and have the strobist kit to carry in the trunk for the spur of the moment stuff.

How are things in southwest missouri? I grew up in Barry County, cant wait to come back and visit.

Thanks for the comments gonzo - sorry it took so long to get back to you.

This area of Missouri is growing, which is great. I'm sure you'll note a lot of changes when you return.
