Vacation shot using the "nifty fifty"

Took this while on vacation. I'm very new to the dSLR game and am just looking for honest feedback.

Nice colors here, but what is it? A vase?

Good illustration of the narrow depth of field one gets with f/1.8.

I like the colors and the comp, but the focus point being in the middle with very shallow DoF doesn't do it for me. It does not draw my eye in. I'd rather see a bit more DoF with the front of the vase in focus.

These are the types of photos that wowed me too when I first got a SLR and a wide aperature lens.

It's lots of fun looking at the world one little sliver of focus at a time. I used to walk around my house just looking at things through the viewfinder.

However, from a critical perspective, there really isn't much going on here. It's a vase. OK cool. If there was something else interesting in the frame, like perhaps a child peering into it, or an insect, or ANYTHING else to help me find a reason why you took this photo other than the shallow DOF it would be a lot better.

It's a hand blown piece of glass that was on display at an art show. And I am "wowed" by the narrow DOF from the little fifty. Thanks everyone for the C&C!!!

Hey, nice location there "neighbor."

I'm new here -- and a complete amateur to boot -- so I'll keep criticisms out of my response, but wanted to echo the "nice color" comments, and also note that the bokeh in this photo is rather nice for coming from the ol' nifty.

I look forward to seeing more of your stuff in the future!
