I'd like to get into automotive photography, following my commission at last years Classic Car Show at the NEC in Birmingham UK. One of the guys at work asked if I'd do some shots of his RX8 so I jumped in at the deep end and decided to have a go a rolling shots. Another mate tagged along with with MX5 too.

Please can I have your c&c on these shots please. Personally, I think they are OK, not brilliant but OK, IQ was a bit disappointing though for a 5D and 24-105. Probably the settings I was using.

So I'm going to pick these apart, instead of just giving them a "Good shot". ;)
As far as having the car sharp with a feeling of movement in the wheels & background, then these are OK.
As far as having the car look as good as possible at the same time, then you need to pick your backgrounds so that they don't add nasty reflections to the car. For instance, #1 has nice highlights in the side except the background has killed the highlights in the hood, windshield, & roof.
#2 is much better, but not there yet.
And just for reference, #3 has no good highlights at all.

Look at SF David's rolling shot in #3 here. The light & reflections in the body are great, & the background doesn't compete with the car for attention. And yes, the rear is a bit OOF, but that doesn't bother me at all.

I did notice recently your "Good shot" comments so I feel honoured ;o)

Thanks for the comments, I'll take these onboard for the next attempt

I will add that I think it's distracting to have the guy's face in the last picture half cut off.

Plus, it would work better if he was a beautiful blonde.....girl.

At least in my opinion.

Good start though, I'm interested in eventually trying these kinds of shots.

I think you nailed the shutter speed on the first shot. Looks like you sped up the shutter speed, or the car slowed down a little bit on the 2nd shot.

Is statement #1 a "lead in" into statement #2, or is it a separate comment? If it is separate from #2, can you elaborate more? Are you thinking the same as grphx in the post above?

These are way better than my first try at rolling shots! The lighting and reflections could be better but overall I think they are nice photos.
