Hi,
Brand new to this section as I'm looking for an HDV camcorder. I'm not looking for anything professional btw. What are your favorites?
Also, I do not have any video editing software. Are there any decent and inexpensive software I should look into? I'll need it for HD editing.
Any info is much appreciated.

Sony vegas is really good and you can get a mini version called sony movie studio, although i dont know what features it has

in vegas you can have numerous layers of video and sound in HD, SD, iPodD, any other format you want. once you get used to the editing system they have its really easy to make sweet vids, also you can take those skills over to something more popular like premiere, even though i dont find premiere near as good as vegas (opinion)

I have VideoStudio 11 Plus and it does everything I want - which isn't much compared to some I'm sure - BUT it doesn't output to 1080p, only 720p. I dunno if I'm missing a setting but it's annoying to shoot 1080 and only get 720 out. So, if you want to stick with 1080 then look elsewhere (or figure out what I'm doing wrong :) ).

dan

I was missing something, 1080p is possible.

One that is nice to have (though hard to use, but absolutely free) is megui+avisynth. You can do just about anything in that combo, but you don't get a gui editor. There are some avisynth gui things out there though if you want to try.

Canon Vixia HF10 and Final Cut Pro are my favorites.

I use Edius - very fast, stable, and multiformat compatible. The best user forum on the net too. You can also run it on a Mac with Bookcamp. http://desktop.grassvalley.com/products/EDIUS/index.php (external link)

If you're on a Mac, Final Cut Pro is your best bet, it comes as part of the Final Cut Studio, USD$999.00 brand new. May or may not be in your budget, but the program is robust - worth the money.

If you want to go top of the line, production quality stuff, avid and enough said. If you aren't that hard core, sony vegas and adobe premiere are top choices. If you want free programs, avisynth+megui+vobsub.

Thanks for the advise.
I've gotten a HF S100 and Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum package. Also, I've purchased a set of training dvd from Vasst and everything is all good.

I'm curious which is better myself. Could you tell me, Vincent, if you like the Sony software?

The Sony software is awesome. I've also bought Vasst trainning DVD and it's worth every penny.
