OK, these video threads seem to come up waaaaay to often lately, so maybe we could get this stickied? If not, maybe we can bump this or link it when people want to cry about "how expensive video makes my DSLR" and how they "don't want it and can't figure out why anyone else on the planet might!"...
OK, let's start with some reasoning. There are features on cameras we all don't use. They have been there for years. Some make sense for a lot of users, they all just don't realize it. Some are useful for a very select few but they're still there. It's your choice to use them or not to use them, but creating different SKUs for similar camera will make them MORE EXPENSIVE. Some examples would be high ISOs, liveview, MLU, rear button AF, etc..
Further, cameras with liveview are very easy to make capture video. Don't beleive me? Check this out:

read about what they're doing here:

but the moral of that story is any DSLR with liveview could be made to record video by a bunch of programmers THAT DON'T HAVE THE MANUFACTURES RESOURCES!!!
Further, the microphone and speaker probably cost canon $5 to purchase, so that price when passed on to the end user isn't much at all. Add to that canon already has video mode on their P&Ss AND makes very good digital video cameras, it's not exactly new ground for them to develop. ADD TO ALL THAT that this feature will make the camera more newsworth, cool, new, the fun new toy, and it WILL sell cameras for them and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. When canon released reverie
it crashed their servers and they ended up using TORRENTS to get it out to all those that wanted to see it!
We've already seen Nikon drop it into their D90, then canon followed with the TS1, and now Nikon has added it to it's D300s... I'd say it's a safe bet that all new DSLRs in the next year and beyond will indeed have video functions included. The only valid complaint I can see with this system is for professional photographers at events where video cameras are restricted due to the contracts for that footage (huge money is paid for exclusive rights). Also, the 5Dii is actually LESS EXPENSIVE at it's launch than the 5D was when it was first released. I'm not talking about inflation corrections or anything like that, the original 5D sold for over $3000 when it was released. The 5Dii started at $2700 and was improved in every way.
Video is here, it's here to stay, stop complaining about it!!!!
- video's already been hacked into 40Ds (showing anything with liveview makes it work)
- canon already sells P&Ss with video
- canon already sells video cameras
- the speaker and mic cost canon peanuts when looking at the overal cost of the body
- this feature has created a lot of great press for canon and the 5Dii
- you don't like it? DON'T USE IT!
- the 5Dii's release MSRP is actually LESS than the original 5D's so it didn't ADD to the price there!!!
Hopefully this helps people understand why it's here. If you don't want to use it, fine, don't. If you want to complain about your favorite body NOT getting some other feature, go right ahead. But don't think video took anything out of the body or made it more expensive. It was an easy bonus for them to add into the body and it's generated a ton of publicity for canon and nikon.
Hopefully this helps!

. Since a number of mid-range and low end models have the video capability, pretty much the only thing left is for high end models to have it. Let's see how it goes with the announcement of the new 1D's.
