Any decent telescope gives you a larger aperture, at least the same focal length, plus a finder scope which makes it feasible to actually acquire your subject with reasonable effort. And it costs by orders of magitude less. Yes, a scope doesn't have AF, but is that really essential at this kind of focal length? There must be a reason why Canon doesn't even bother offering it anymore .... Discovery is not accidental. We discover only when we make ourselves ready to receive and photographers seek discovery by mastering their craft. But it begins somewhere else. It begins with daisies, kids, awful scenes, falling in love, or growing old. It begins with that which matters to you. And it ends with visual statements that express what matters to you about these things. It is not sight the camera satisfies so thoroughly, but the mind. - Christian Molidor

It matters more and more with every additional millimeter. TANSTAAFL--The Only Unbreakable Rule in Photography

It matters more and more with every additional millimeter. Any 1200mm lens is not a hand holdable lens which you just point somewhere and fire away, it needs a very stable mount which won't allow you to move quickly at all. It takes forever (compared to a 300mm tele) to just acquire your subject, so turning an AF ring shouldn't be a big issue. In case a variable aperture is even required for an F/5.6 lens: There are even refractor telescopes which have huge apertures and long focal lengths and still cost a lot less than the 1200L. Obviously a refractor also doesn't have the O shaped bokeh. Depends on which telescope you look at. RDKirk wrote in post #8427774 Actually, Canon does offer it, but they are produced on order. I did not find it on their official web page, but read a number of forum posts which claimed it to be no longer offered by Canon. I may be wrong, of course. Discovery is not accidental.
